Doha, the sports capital, is preparing for a promising Gulf championship
Qatar is preparing to open a new chapter in the history of Gulf football by hosting the inaugural Arabian Gulf Cup U-23 2025™. The tournament will take place from December 4th to 16th, bringing together the region's top emerging football talents in Doha, a city that has established itself as a global sports capital. This edition is particularly significant as it is the first to be officially organized under the auspices of the Arabian Gulf Cup Football Federation, representing a strategic step towards developing youth football in the region.
A renewed sporting legacy and a platform for young talent
Qatar's hosting of this tournament is a natural extension of its rich sporting heritage, particularly following the resounding success of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. The country is investing in its world-class sports infrastructure to foster sporting development at both the regional and continental levels. Historically, since its inception in 1970, the Gulf Cup for national teams has been a sporting and social event that unites the people of the region. Today, the launch of the Under-23 edition fills a crucial gap in players' development, providing them with a high-level competitive platform before they move on to their senior national teams, and giving them the opportunity to gain international experience at a critical age.
Supporting future stars and promoting regional competition
Jassim Sultan Al Rumaihi, Secretary General of the Arabian Gulf Cup Football Federation, emphasized the tournament's strategic objectives, stating: “The Under-23 Championship embodies our unwavering commitment to nurturing young footballing talent and fostering a spirit of competition among players. It serves as a pivotal stepping stone for their transition to the senior national teams, and we urge fans to support these future stars throughout the tournament.” The tournament is expected to have a significant positive impact, not only by crowning a new Gulf champion in this age category but also by raising the technical level of the participating teams and providing coaching staff with an opportunity to discover and evaluate players who will form the core of future national teams in the World Cup and Asian Cup qualifiers.
Intense competition between eight teams
The tournament features eight Gulf national teams divided into two groups. Group A includes hosts Qatar, along with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait, promising intense and highly competitive matches. Group B comprises Iraq, the UAE, Oman, and Yemen. The 14 group stage matches will be played at two stadiums within the Aspire Zone, a state-of-the-art sports complex. In a move aimed at increasing fan attendance, entry to all group stage matches will be free, offering supporters a unique opportunity to witness the young talents in action firsthand.
A highly anticipated start and a final on World Cup soil
The 2025 Gulf Cup U-23 tournament kicks off on December 4 with a match between Iraq and Yemen at 2:45 PM. The Qatari national team, Al-Annabi, begins its campaign the following day, December 5, against Kuwait at the same time. All eyes will be on the final, to be held on December 16 at Stadium 974, the historic World Cup venue that made history as the first fully demountable stadium in the tournament's history. Hosting the final at this stadium underscores Qatar's enduring World Cup legacy and comes as part of a packed sporting season that also includes the country's hosting of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025™, further solidifying its position as a leading destination for major sporting events.
