National context: Addressing water challenges in the Kingdom
This project is part of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to address water scarcity, one of the region’s greatest environmental challenges. Historically, the Kingdom has relied heavily on non-renewable groundwater, but with the launch of Vision 2030, the focus has shifted towards more sustainable solutions. The National Water Strategy 2030 adopts an integrated approach aimed at rationalizing consumption, increasing reliance on desalinated and treated water sources, and developing modern transmission and distribution networks to minimize losses and ensure access to high-quality water for every citizen and resident. The Zulfi and Thadiq project embodies this vision, contributing to reducing pressure on groundwater resources and providing safe and sustainable water.
Importance and expected impacts of the project
The project is of paramount importance on several levels. Locally , it will dramatically improve the quality of life for residents of Zulfi and Thadiq, ending their reliance on costly and unreliable water tankers and providing them with a reliable, round-the-clock water supply. It will also support economic and urban growth in the two governorates, making them more attractive for investment and residence. Regionally , the project enhances infrastructure integration in the Riyadh region and contributes to balanced development between the capital and its surrounding governorates. Internationally , this investment reflects the Kingdom's commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6, which focuses on ensuring the availability and access to water and sanitation for all, thus reinforcing the Kingdom's position as a leader in water resource management.
Invitation for customers to take advantage of the service
In closing, the National Water Company affirmed that the project aligns with its plans to achieve water security and enhance operational efficiency according to the highest quality standards. The company urged its customers in the neighborhoods and developments covered by the project to proactively request service connections through its official channels, whether via its mobile application or its online portal, to benefit from the new water network.
