The National Center for Meteorology issued an important warning today, Friday, regarding the expected weather conditions in Sharurah Governorate, indicating that the region will be affected by surface wind activity and dust storms, which calls for caution and vigilance on the part of citizens, residents and highway users.
Weather details
The center explained in its daily report that the weather conditions include the formation of dust storms accompanied by strong winds, which directly leads to a decrease in horizontal visibility. According to forecasts from weather models, visibility may drop to between 3 and 5 kilometers in some exposed areas and on the governorate's highways.
The National Center for Meteorology indicated that this weather condition will continue - God willing - until 6 pm on Friday, urging everyone to follow the continuous updates through the center's official channels.
The geographical and climatic context of Sharurah Governorate
These warnings are particularly important given the geographical location of Sharurah Governorate, situated in the southern part of Saudi Arabia and administratively part of the Najran Region. The governorate is characterized by its desert location bordering the Rub' al Khali desert, resulting in sandy and exposed terrain. This geographical feature makes the area highly susceptible to dust storms caused by wind activity, as fine sand can easily be blown and carried over distances, potentially impacting residential areas and roads connecting the governorate to other regions.
The importance of warnings and safety measures
Such warnings are a cornerstone of ensuring public safety, as the dust storms directly affect two vital sectors:
- Road Safety: Reduced horizontal visibility increases the risk of traffic accidents, especially on highways and open roads connecting Sharurah to Najran or Riyadh. Therefore, authorities advise drivers to reduce their speed, use hazard lights when necessary, and avoid overland travel during peak dust storms unless absolutely necessary.
- Public health: Dust particles pose a risk to those with respiratory conditions, asthma, and allergies. In such weather, doctors advise staying indoors as much as possible, keeping windows tightly closed, and wearing face masks when going outside to avoid inhaling dust that can irritate the airways.
The role of the National Center for Meteorology
This alert comes as part of the ongoing efforts of the National Center for Meteorology to monitor the atmosphere and protect lives and property, through the use of the latest technologies in monitoring weather fluctuations and issuing early warnings according to an accurate automated system that covers all regions of the Kingdom.
