The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued its daily weather report, forecasting continued weather fluctuations and thunderstorms of varying intensity, ranging from moderate to heavy, across large parts of the Kingdom on Friday and Saturday. The center urged citizens and residents to exercise caution and follow its official channels for ongoing updates.
Details of the expected rainfall
The report indicated that the Eastern Province would be among the most affected areas, with moderate to heavy rainfall expected in Hafr Al-Batin, Al-Khafji, Qaryat Al-Ulya, and Al-Nairiyah. Meanwhile, Jubail, Ras Tanura, Qatif, Dammam, Khobar, Abqaiq, and Al-Ahsa are expected to experience light to moderate rain on Saturday. The forecast also includes other regions, with moderate to heavy rain expected in Buraidah, Unaizah, and Riyadh Al-Khabra in the Qassim region, in addition to the Hail and Riyadh regions, which will also be affected by the weather system.
The climatic context and the importance of rainfall in the Kingdom
This rainfall is part of the climatic context of Saudi Arabia, which is characterized by arid desert climate in most of its regions. The winter and spring seasons (known locally as the Wasim period) are the main rainy seasons in the country. These weather patterns typically form as a result of the interaction of low-pressure systems originating from the Mediterranean Sea with an extension of the Red Sea trough, leading to the formation of rain-bearing thunderclouds over various areas, particularly in the northern, central, and eastern regions.
Expected effects and the importance of warnings
These rains are of great importance both environmentally and socially. While they replenish groundwater reserves and contribute to vegetation growth, positively impacting agriculture and pastures, they can also pose a risk if they become heavy. The center warned of the possibility of flash floods in valleys and ravines, and of strong downdrafts that could stir up dust and reduce horizontal visibility. It also cautioned about the potential for hail and high waves along the coasts. Relevant authorities, such as the General Directorate of Civil Defense, are raising their level of preparedness to deal with any emergencies that may arise from these weather fluctuations, emphasizing the need for residents to stay away from floodplains and low-lying areas.
The National Center for Meteorology stressed the importance of following the latest developments and alerts issued through its website and the “Anwaa” application, and of fully adhering to the instructions and guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety.
