The Czech Football Association has appointed Miroslav Koubek as the national team coach, succeeding Ivan Hašek. Learn about the contract details, the playoff matches against Ireland, and Pavel Nedvěd's comments on qualifying.

The Czech Football Association announced on Friday the appointment of veteran coach Miroslav Koubek as the new manager of the national team on a two-and-a-half-year contract. This decisive move aims to lead the team in the European playoffs for the 2026 World Cup, scheduled for next March, in an effort to get back on track and restore the prestige of Czech football.

A rescue mission after the elimination setback

The appointment of Kubek (74 years old) comes after the dismissal of former coach Ivan Hašek, who was sacked last October following a shocking and humiliating 1-2 home defeat to the Faroe Islands. That loss was not just a minor setback, but the final straw that led to the Czech Republic dropping to second place in Group L, a full six points behind leaders Croatia, forcing them into the difficult European playoffs.

A thorny path towards the 2026 World Cup

The new coach faces a daunting task: the Czech Republic hosts Ireland in Prague on March 26. Should Kubik overcome this hurdle, he will then face a decisive playoff match, also in Prague, on March 31, against the winner of the Denmark-North Macedonia tie. It's worth noting that the draw has placed the winner of this tie in Group A of the World Cup finals, alongside Mexico, South Africa, and South Korea, thus raising the stakes and increasing the pressure.

Kubik's experience and the support of the legend Nedved

Despite his age, Koubek boasts an impressive coaching record, particularly with Czech First League clubs. His most recent stint was with Viktoria Plzen, where he guided them to the Conference League quarterfinals in 2024 and the Europa League round of 16, demonstrating his ability to manage major European matches. Koubek optimistically stated, “We will do everything we can to secure qualification… I call it a game of luck, but I am optimistic and I believe we will succeed.”.

For his part, Pavel Nedved, the Juventus legend and current general manager of the national team, confirmed that Kubik was the undisputed first choice, praising his recent European successes and confirming that he meets all the required criteria for the current stage.

historic World Cup complex

The Czech national team faces a historic challenge: breaking their World Cup drought. Since Czech independence and the breakup of Czechoslovakia in 1993, the Czechs have maintained a strong and consistent presence in the European Championship (Euro), reaching the final in 1996 and the semi-finals in 2004. However, the team has struggled at the World Cup level, qualifying only once, in the 2006 edition in Germany, where they were eliminated in the group stage. Therefore, the arrival of coach Kubek carries with it the hopes of an entire nation yearning to see their flag flying high once again on the world stage.
