Minister of Information Salman Al-Dossari launches the first phase of the program to develop press institutions by signing strategic agreements to enhance digital transformation and financial sustainability for newspapers.

In a strategic move aimed at reshaping the media landscape in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Minister of Media Salman bin Yousef Al-Dossari today presided over the signing ceremony for a package of high-quality partnership agreements, marking the launch of the first phase of the program to develop press institutions . The ceremony was attended by a distinguished group of dignitaries and heads of government agencies, as well as leaders from the private sector and chairmen and editors-in-chief of national press institutions.

The context of digital transformation and keeping pace with Vision 2030

This step comes at a crucial time, as the global media sector undergoes radical transformations. Traditional journalism faces major challenges posed by the digital revolution and changing patterns of public information consumption. This program aligns directly with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 , which seeks to enhance quality of life and build a vibrant society, where media is a fundamental pillar in conveying an accurate picture of national achievements.

The program primarily aims to enable long-established media institutions to overcome the challenges of the times by updating their business models, adopting the latest technologies in newsrooms, and enhancing their presence in the digital space, thereby ensuring their financial and professional sustainability and raising the quality of journalistic content provided to local and international audiences.

Quality partnerships to enhance specialized content

The ceremony witnessed the signing of memoranda of understanding and agreements that brought together the public and private sectors and press institutions, to enhance integration in several areas:

  • Regional Development: The Madinah Region Development Authority signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Madinah Press and Publishing Foundation to create a media model that serves visitors and residents of the region and enhances digital publishing tools in a manner befitting the status of the holy city.
  • Supporting tourism: The Saudi Tourism Authority signed a memorandum of understanding with the Asir Foundation for Press and Publication (Al-Watan Newspaper) to enrich tourism media content and reach wider segments of the public, in support of the promising tourism sector in the Kingdom.

Investing in human and technological capital

Recognizing the importance of human resources in leading transformation, the Saudi Media Academy memoranda of understanding with Al-Madina newspaper, Al-Watan newspaper, and Makkah newspaper. These agreements aim to enhance cooperation in specialized professional training, recruitment, and knowledge exchange to ensure the development of a generation of Saudi media professionals capable of utilizing new media tools.

On the technical front, a partnership agreement was signed with Trend Company as a digital partner and sponsor for the first phase. The company will provide consulting services and innovative technological solutions to the partner newspapers (Al-Madina, Al-Watan, and Makkah) to help develop revenue models and create high-quality content that enhances operational efficiency.

The future of media regulation

The ministry affirmed that the program for developing media institutions will be subject to close monitoring and continuous evaluation by the General Authority for Media Regulation. This phase is merely the beginning of a series of upcoming regulatory and legislative steps being prepared to issue a comprehensive media system that will enable media institutions to diversify their revenue streams and enhance their independence and sustainability for years to come, thereby strengthening the Kingdom's soft power in the media sphere.
