The National Center for Meteorology has issued urgent and advanced warnings regarding a severe weather instability affecting the Madinah region, with its direct effects expected to begin next Sunday. These warnings come as part of ongoing weather monitoring, with forecasts indicating heavy rainfall accompanied by severe weather phenomena that could disrupt daily life in the region.
Weather details and affected areas
According to the center's report, the peak of the rainfall will be from Sunday to Tuesday, with the governorates of Al-Ula, Yanbu, Badr, and Al-Ais experiencing heavy rainfall that may lead to flash floods. Meanwhile, Medina, Khaybar, Al-Hanakiya, Al-Mahd, and Wadi Al-Fara' will experience scattered rainfall during the same period, necessitating caution from residents and visitors.
Severe weather phenomena: tornadoes and downdrafts
What distinguishes this weather system is its association with severe weather phenomena. The center explained that the rain will be accompanied by strong downdrafts with speeds exceeding 60 km/h, leading to dust storms and reduced horizontal visibility. The center also warned of the possibility of tornadoes and waterspouts (especially in coastal areas like Yanbu), in addition to heavy hail, which increases the risk of skidding on highways.
Geographical and climatic context of the region
These warnings are particularly important given the geographical nature of the Madinah region, which includes many large valleys and ravines, such as Wadi Al-Aqiq and Wadi Qanat. Historically, these valleys are known for their rapid flash floods during heavy rainfall, posing a real danger to hikers or those traveling on roads that intersect with the flood channels. These weather fluctuations are part of the transitional season the Kingdom is experiencing, during which cold and warm air masses interact, causing strong periods of atmospheric instability.
The importance of adhering to safety instructions
Given these forecasts, adhering to the instructions of the Civil Defense and relevant authorities is of paramount importance. These authorities typically advise staying away from valleys and floodplains, and avoiding low-lying areas. Drivers are also urged to exercise extreme caution while driving in downdrafts and during hailstorms, and to stay updated on the latest weather conditions through official channels to ensure public safety.
