The National Center for Meteorology has issued a weather alert for Medina, warning of strong winds in Yanbu and Al-Rais, and dense fog in several governorates. Learn more.

The National Center for Meteorology in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia issued today an important warning regarding the expected weather conditions in the Madinah region, indicating weather fluctuations ranging from active winds stirring up dust to dense fog that limits horizontal visibility, which calls for caution and vigilance on the part of citizens, residents and drivers.

Weather conditions and active winds details

The center explained in its daily report that the region will experience increased surface wind activity, particularly along the coastal areas including Al-Rais and Yanbu. Wind speeds are expected to reach between 40 and 49 kilometers per hour. This weather condition will not only stir up dust and sand but will also be accompanied by a significant rise in wave height, which may affect maritime activities and small-scale navigation in those areas. The center specified that this weather pattern will begin at 7:00 AM and continue until 5:00 PM.

Dense fog and reduced visibility

In a related development, the meteorological department warned of another weather phenomenon affecting the interior of the region, with fog expected in the governorates of Al-Hanakiya, Al-Mahd, Badr, and Wadi Al-Fara. This condition will be accompanied by a sharp decrease in horizontal visibility, ranging from only 1 to 3 kilometers. The fog is expected to begin very early, around 1:00 AM, and continue until 8:00 AM, coinciding with the peak morning commuting hours, thus requiring extreme caution.

Geographical context and importance of the warning

These warnings are particularly important given the geographical nature of the Medina region, which combines coastal areas on the Red Sea with mountainous and inland regions. Yanbu, as an industrial center and important port, is directly affected by sea conditions and wind speeds, which can impact logistical activities and fishing operations. Furthermore, the highways connecting Medina to its governorates (such as the Hijrah Road and the Yanbu Expressway) are vital arteries for pilgrims, Umrah performers, and visitors; therefore, any reduction in visibility due to fog or dust poses a potential risk to traffic safety.

Public safety guidelines

The National Center of Meteorology and relevant authorities have urged everyone to adhere to safety guidelines during these weather fluctuations. Drivers are advised to maintain a safe following distance, use fog lights when necessary, and avoid high speeds, especially in open areas prone to crosswinds or fog. The Center also emphasized the importance of staying updated on weather reports through official channels to ensure everyone's safety.
