The Special Forces for Environmental Security in Madinah arrested a resident who violated the environmental regulations by dumping concrete materials, in a move that reflects the Kingdom’s efforts to protect the environment.

The Saudi Arabian Special Forces for Environmental Security announced the arrest of a Pakistani resident in the Madinah region for a blatant violation of environmental regulations. The violation consisted of polluting the environment and damaging the soil by dumping concrete materials in unauthorized locations, posing a threat to the local ecosystem and land integrity.

Background of national efforts to protect the environment

This incident comes within the context of broader and more rigorous national efforts undertaken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to protect its natural resources and preserve its environment. With the launch of Vision 2030, environmental protection has become a cornerstone of sustainable development plans. The Special Forces for Environmental Security were established as the executive arm of the Ministry of Interior to enforce environmental regulations, monitor compliance, and apprehend violators. These forces combat all forms of environmental violations, from illegal logging and overgrazing to industrial, land, and marine pollution, reflecting a strategic shift towards adopting global environmental standards.

The importance of the incident and its expected impact

The significance of this incident lies in its clear message that Saudi authorities will not tolerate any practices that harm the environment, regardless of their scale or perpetrator. The dumping of concrete waste not only mars the landscape but also causes severe damage to the soil. Chemicals present in concrete can leach into the soil and groundwater, altering their chemical and physical properties and rendering them unsuitable for agriculture. It also destroys natural vegetation. Locally, such measures contribute to preserving the pristine environment of Medina, a city of special sanctity and significance. Nationally, the application of deterrent penalties fosters a culture of environmental responsibility among both individuals and businesses.

Legal procedures and deterrent penalties

Upon apprehending the violator, the Special Forces for Environmental Security confirmed that initial legal procedures were applied, and the case was referred to the competent authorities to complete the investigations and apply the penalties stipulated in the Environmental Law. The Forces clarified that the penalty for engaging in any activity that directly or indirectly damages or pollutes the soil, or negatively impacts its use, is a hefty fine that can reach ten million Saudi riyals (10,000,000 SAR), highlighting the seriousness with which the state addresses these crimes.

A call for social responsibility

Security authorities reiterated their call for citizens and residents to immediately report any instances of environmental or wildlife abuse. This can be done by calling 911 in the Makkah, Riyadh, and Eastern regions, or 999 and 996 in the rest of the Kingdom. They emphasized that all reports will be treated with complete confidentiality and that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility.
