Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola confirmed on Friday that England international defender Mark Jehee is ready to make his debut for the Sky Blues in Saturday's Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium.
The introduction of the new signing comes at a critical juncture for the defending champions, as the team desperately seeks a way out of its recent slump. Manchester City has not tasted victory in the Premier League since its last win against Nottingham Forest (2-1) on December 27th, placing the team under immense pressure from fans and the media.
Timely defensive reinforcements
Manchester City acted swiftly, securing the signing of center-back Mark Ghehe from Crystal Palace last Monday on a long-term contract extending five and a half years. This acquisition comes as a direct response to the defensive woes that have plagued the team's back line due to recurring injuries and a decline in form, costing them valuable points and widening the gap with league leaders Arsenal to a full seven points.
In the pre-match press conference, Guardiola responded to journalists' questions about Jehi's participation, saying, "Yes, yes... it's a very good signing considering he's a really good centre-back." The Spanish coach added, commenting on the player's ability to help the team regain its balance: "He's an England international and was captain of his previous club last season. I have a strong feeling he can make a difference, but the problem isn't about one player, and the solution isn't about an individual but about the group as a whole.".
Crisis of confidence and competition for the title
City are experiencing a period of instability rarely seen under Guardiola, suffering a series of shocking results recently, most notably a painful 2-0 defeat in the Manchester derby against United, followed by a surprising 3-1 loss to Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt in the Champions League last Tuesday. Guardiola described his team's situation after these matches as having "fragile" confidence.
Guardiola stressed the need to get back to winning ways, saying: "We can't afford to lose games. Manchester City is such a perfect club that we can't afford to lose. That's the reality, and we have to change the current situation and try to win tomorrow's game against Wolverhampton, as well as next Wednesday's game against Galatasaray in the Champions League.".
Despite this setback, Guardiola defended the quality and mentality of his players, asserting: "I have an exceptional team and a fantastic group of players. We are a great team, and I have no doubt about that." Tomorrow's match presents an ideal opportunity for City to bounce back, especially as their opponent, Wolverhampton, is struggling this season, languishing at the bottom of the league table with just eight points from 22 matches and a staggering 14 points adrift of safety. This theoretically makes the match winnable for the home side, but psychological pressure could prove decisive.
