Michael Carrick urges Manchester United players to remain humble ahead of their clash with league leaders Arsenal, and confirms Casemiro's departure at the end of the season. Read the details of the match and the manager's comments.

Manchester United's interim manager, Michael Carrick, issued a stern warning to his players, urging them not to be complacent ahead of their crucial Premier League clash against league leaders Arsenal. These comments come at a critical time as the team attempts to regain its footing and compete for a European qualification spot.

A strong start and challenges ahead

Carrick began his second stint as interim manager of the Red Devils with a remarkable and exciting 2-0 victory over bitter rivals Manchester City, managed by Spaniard Pep Guardiola, in the Manchester derby last Saturday. The team delivered a superb attacking performance that dispelled the gloom that had hung over Old Trafford, converting their dominance into two decisive goals scored by Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Djordjeu in the second half, much to the disappointment of City fans.

In the pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday's summit clash, Carrick said: "It's been a very good week; we've got a great result and a fantastic performance, and there's a positive feeling on the pitch and in the dressing room. But now it's about finding the delicate balance between taking encouragement and confidence from that win and staying calm and humble." The 44-year-old added: "We have another big game coming up. One game doesn't make you a great team overnight, but it gives us a great foundation to build on for the future.".

The struggle for supremacy and European centers

This match is of paramount importance to both teams. Manchester United currently sits fifth in the table with 35 points from 22 games and is striving to close the gap with the top four to secure a Champions League spot. Meanwhile, Arsenal sits atop the league with 50 points, consistently delivering performances that make them the clear favorites for the title this season. Carrick commented on the strength of their opponents, saying, "I'm looking forward to the game; it's a big challenge. Arsenal is a very good team with many strengths. Their position at the top is no accident, and we are fully aware of that.".

The end of Casemiro's journey

On another note, Carrick addressed the future of veteran Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, confirming the reports circulating on Thursday regarding his departure from the club at the end of the current season when his contract expires. Despite a clause allowing for a one-year extension, the club's management decided against activating it. Carrick explained: "The purpose of the announcement regarding Casemiro was primarily to provide clarity and transparency. The decision was made before I arrived, and it wasn't a hasty one.".

The Brazilian star joined Old Trafford in August 2022 from Real Madrid in a massive £60 million deal (approximately $80.9 million). He made 146 appearances for United, scoring 21 goals, and played a pivotal role in the team's League Cup triumph in 2023, scoring a header in the final against Newcastle. He was also part of the squad that lifted the FA Cup in 2024, thus capping off a remarkable career in English football that adds to his legendary status with Real Madrid.
