Officially... Manchester United appoint their legend Michael Carrick as manager until the end of the season, replacing Reuben Amorim. Learn more about his new role and the upcoming derby challenge.

In a move aimed at reshuffling the squad at Old Trafford, Manchester United, currently seventh in the Premier League, announced on Tuesday the appointment of their former captain and legend, Michael Carrick, as manager until the end of the season. This decision places Carrick in the driver's seat following the dismissal last week of Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim due to poor results.

In his first statement following his appointment, Carrick expressed his pride in the role, saying: "Taking on the responsibility of leading Manchester United is a great honor. I know what it takes to succeed here. My focus now is on helping the players reach the standards we expect at this exceptional club, standards we are confident this group is fully capable of achieving." He added optimistically: "There's still a lot to fight for this season, and we're ready to put everyone together and deliver the performances the fans deserve for their unwavering support.".

The prodigal son returns to save the season

Michael Carrick is no stranger to the intense atmosphere at Manchester United. The 44-year-old has a long and distinguished history with the club, having spent 12 years there, winning 12 major trophies, making him one of the most respected figures in the club's modern history. Jason Willcox, the club's director of football, praised the appointment, saying: "Michael is an excellent manager and knows exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United. He is ready to lead our talented and hard-working group of players for the remainder of the season as we continue to build the club towards consistent and sustainable success.".

This move comes after a period of managerial instability, with the club sacking Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim after just 14 months in charge due to unsatisfactory results and clear strategic disagreements. The brief interim period saw Scot Darren Fletcher take over temporarily, leading the team to a disappointing 2-2 draw against Burnley and a 2-1 defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup.

Immediate challenges and a race towards Europe

Carrick faces a tough test at the start of his tenure, beginning with the highly anticipated Manchester derby against arch-rivals Manchester City next Saturday at Old Trafford in the 22nd round of matches. This game is of paramount importance not only because it is a derby, but also because the team desperately needs points.

Manchester United currently sit seventh in the table, just three points adrift of the top four and Champions League qualification places, and one point behind fifth-placed Brentford. With early exits from both domestic cup competitions and no European football to play, the team will only have 40 matches this season – the fewest for the club since 1914-15 – making their sole focus on improving their league position to secure a European spot for next season.

It is worth noting that Carrick has previous coaching experience, having taken over Middlesbrough in October 2022 and led them to the Premier League promotion playoffs in his first season. He also briefly managed United in 2021, giving fans a glimmer of hope that he can lift the team out of its current slump.
