Comprehensive preparations for the Umrah season during Ramadan
The General Transport Center announced the completion of its comprehensive operational preparations for transportation services in Makkah during the holy month of Ramadan, which sees the arrival of millions of pilgrims and visitors from around the world. These efforts are part of an integrated system aimed at improving traffic flow and mobility, providing flexible and safe transportation options, and supporting smooth traffic movement during peak daily hours, particularly in the central area surrounding the Grand Mosque and other high-traffic locations.
The importance of transportation management during peak seasons in Mecca
Managing the transportation system in Mecca during Ramadan is of paramount importance due to the massive increase in the number of pilgrims visiting the Grand Mosque. These efforts are an extension of Saudi Arabia's long history of experience in managing crowds and religious seasons, as the Kingdom dedicates all its resources to ensuring the comfort and safety of the pilgrims. These operational plans align with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which prioritizes enhancing the Hajj and Umrah experience by developing infrastructure and providing world-class services that facilitate their performance of rituals with ease and peace of mind.
Integrated operational plan for taxis and buses
Preparations included developing comprehensive operational plans for Makkah taxis and buses. The plan encompassed organizing designated pick-up and drop-off points and allocating operational capacity according to anticipated demand. Entry of Makkah taxis into the central area was also regulated through approved permit mechanisms to manage traffic flow and reduce congestion. This is achieved through ongoing field coordination with security and other relevant authorities, ensuring the safety of service users and enhancing operational efficiency, particularly during daily peak hours and the last ten nights of Ramadan.
Enhancing public transport with new shuttle routes
As part of efforts to support public transportation, the operational plan included increasing the capacity of the Makkah Bus service and organizing its routes within the central area. To facilitate access for worshippers and pilgrims, two new shuttle bus routes to and from the Grand Mosque were introduced: one via the Aisha Mosque station to the central Jabal al-Kaaba station, and the other via the Haramain High-Speed Railway station to the eastern Jabal al-Kaaba station. These new routes aim to reduce traffic congestion on the roads surrounding the Grand Mosque and provide a fast and organized means of transportation.
Enhancing technical readiness and ensuring service continuity
In terms of enhancing technical and operational readiness, the center worked to ensure the operational fleets were prepared, implement periodic maintenance programs, and provide necessary field support, including mobile maintenance workshops and emergency response mechanisms. All of this aims to guarantee reliable and continuous operation around the clock, while monitoring compliance with safety requirements and the quality of service provided to pilgrims.
The local and international impact of successful transport plans
The success of these plans extends beyond the local level, facilitating the lives of Mecca's residents and visitors, to encompass international dimensions. Globally, the efficient organization of transportation services during this busy season reflects Saudi Arabia's ability to manage one of the world's largest human gatherings with high efficiency, enhancing its reputation as a safe and well-organized spiritual destination for Muslims from around the world and contributing to a rich and accessible religious experience for them.
