In a move that reflects the integration between government agencies and the non-profit sector, and embodies the concepts of social responsibility and sustainability, the branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture in the Makkah region, represented by the Markets and Slaughterhouses Department, delivered huge quantities of agricultural products to one of the approved charitable associations in Jeddah Governorate.
The handover ceremony took place at the Jeddah Central Fruit and Vegetable Market, with a total quantity of 11,431 kg of various fruits and vegetables. This initiative is part of the Ministry's strategy to enhance food safety, reduce food waste, and transform regulatory challenges into opportunities to support vulnerable groups within the community.
Strict standards to ensure safety
The delivery process was not a mere routine procedure; it was preceded by thorough and comprehensive inspections. The branch explained that its technical and supervisory staff ensured that all products were fit for human consumption according to the highest health standards and approved regulations. The confiscated goods and products are carefully sorted at the central market; spoiled items are immediately destroyed to prevent them from reaching consumers, while suitable items are directed to support charitable organizations, thus ensuring that safe and healthy food reaches beneficiaries.
National context for enhancing food security
This step gains particular importance when placed in its broader national context, as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia pays great attention to the issue of food security and reducing food loss and waste, in line with the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture is working diligently through the National Program for Reducing Food Loss and Waste to raise awareness of the importance of preserving natural resources and making the most of agricultural products instead of wasting them.
This initiative is a practical model for how to manage resources in central markets, where the supervisory role is transformed from merely monitoring violations to an effective tool in social development, which contributes to meeting the needs of needy families and reducing the environmental impact resulting from the disposal of perfectly good food.
Strategic partnership and social responsibility
The ministry branch confirmed that this initiative falls under the umbrella of social responsibility and aims to strengthen partnerships with the third sector (charitable organizations). The beneficiary charity expressed its appreciation for this valuable initiative, praising the vital role played by the ministry branch and the Markets and Slaughterhouses Department in supporting charitable work and providing fresh food baskets to those in need.
In a related context, the Ministry's branch in Jeddah continues to intensify its field inspection tours of the central fruit and vegetable market, in coordination with relevant security and government agencies. These ongoing tours aim to control prices, monitor the quality of produce, and prevent commercial fraud, while applying legal penalties to violators, to ensure a safe and sustainable shopping environment for residents and visitors of the province.
