With the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan, the Madinah Buses Project, overseen by the Madinah Region Development Authority, announced the activation of its dedicated shuttle bus service for the month. This initiative is part of the annual operational plan aimed at facilitating the movement of Madinah residents and visitors, and easing their access to the Prophet's Mosque for prayers and religious observances during this month, when the number of people visiting the city of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) increases significantly.

Background and importance of the service during Ramadan

Madinah holds immense spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide, a status that intensifies during Ramadan when millions of visitors from within the Kingdom and abroad flock to the city to perform Umrah and pray at the Prophet's Mosque. This massive influx places tremendous pressure on the road infrastructure and traffic flow in the central area surrounding the Haram. Hence, the importance of organized public transportation projects like "Madinah Buses" has become paramount. These projects offer effective and sustainable solutions to alleviate traffic congestion and provide a safe and comfortable travel experience for worshippers and visitors, allowing them to focus on the spiritual aspect of their visit.

3 main stations to serve the neighborhoods of Medina

The shuttle service operates from three main stations, carefully selected to cover a wide geographical area of residential neighborhoods, ensuring maximum benefit for residents and visitors. These stations include:

  • Al-Ustad Sports Station: This station serves a wide range of neighborhoods including: Al-Difaa, Tayba, Urwa, Al-Nakheel, Al-Aziziya, Abu Buraiqa, Dhu Al-Halifa, Al-Wabra, Al-Jami’a, Al-Daitha, Al-Salam, Al-Jamawat, and Jamat Umm Khalid.
  • Shatha Station: This station covers the neighborhoods of: Shatha, Al-Nuzha, Al-Dar, Al-Matar, King Fahd, Al-Shafiya, Al-Aridh, Al-Mab'outh, Al-Duwaikhla, Jashm, and Aira.
  • The Garden Station: Its coverage includes the neighborhoods of: Al-Ahn, Al-Khatim, Al-Asaba, Al-Qaswa, Al-Jabrah, Shuran, Al-Rawabi, Wadi Mahzur, Wadi Mudhaynib, Al-Hadiqa, Al-Ranuna, and Al-Sadd.

Those wishing to use the service can view the detailed route map and departure times through the official channels of the City Bus Project.

Expected impact and alignment of the service with Vision 2030

The impact of the shuttle bus service project extends beyond simply improving traffic flow; it encompasses other dimensions aligned with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030. Locally, the service contributes to enhancing the efficiency of the public transportation system, reducing carbon emissions from vehicle exhaust, and providing safe and accessible transportation options. Regionally and internationally, offering advanced logistical services to visitors of the Two Holy Mosques enhances their religious experience and reinforces the Kingdom's image as a leading nation in serving pilgrims, a key pillar of the Vision's programs related to developing the Hajj, Umrah, and tourism sectors.
