The Eastern Province Chamber of Commerce announced a significant strategic initiative aimed at reshaping the region's logistics and traffic landscape, in collaboration with the Eastern Province Development Authority and Dammam Airports Company. This initiative involves launching a vital project to establish and operate an integrated service center and dedicated truck parking facilities within the King Fahd International Airport complex, an effort designed to provide fundamental solutions to the challenges facing the heavy transport sector.
Project details and its strategic location
The Chamber invited specialized national companies and institutions to participate in the bidding process for this project, which was carefully selected for its location on the GCC Highway in the southern direction. This site is a pivotal point serving both through and local heavy transport traffic, ensuring that trucks are kept away from residential areas and reducing pressure on internal roads.
The project aims primarily to eliminate the phenomenon of random truck congestion on the streets and roads of Dammam, by providing a safe and organized alternative equipped with all the services and facilities needed by drivers and transport companies, which directly contributes to easing traffic congestion and freeing up movement within cities.
Compliance with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy
This project is not merely a solution to an immediate traffic problem; it is part of a broader framework aligned with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 and the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which aims to solidify the Kingdom's position as a global logistics hub connecting three continents. The Eastern Province plays a pivotal role in this strategy due to its strategic geographic location as a gateway for industry and energy, and its proximity to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This makes regulating truck traffic and supply chains within the region a top priority to ensure the efficient flow of goods.
Economic and developmental dimensions of Al-Bayda Governorate
This move is an integral part of the comprehensive development plan for Al-Bayda Governorate, where the new center will serve as a vital artery supporting the logistics sector. The project is expected to enhance the region's investment appeal by providing advanced infrastructure that supports rapid economic growth and facilitates trade, thereby reducing operating costs for transport companies and improving the efficiency of supply chains.
Enhancing traffic safety and improving the urban landscape
The project's engineering plan focuses on significantly improving road safety on highways and internal roads. By diverting heavy truck traffic away from the city center and towards a dedicated service area, the number of truck-related traffic accidents will be reduced, and the internal road infrastructure will be protected from damage caused by overloading.
The Eastern Province Chamber of Commerce affirmed that this project represents the fruit of unifying efforts and integrating roles between “Eastern Province Development” and “Dammam Airports” to improve the urban landscape and address the visual distortion resulting from trucks parking in vacant lots and within neighborhoods, calling on investors to seize this opportunity and contribute to a qualitative shift in the region’s transportation system.
