Barcelona announced on Sunday that their Polish striker Robert Lewandowski will miss the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final against Atlético Madrid. The confirmation came after the player suffered a fractured eyebrow bone, ruling him out of the highly anticipated match.
The Catalan club issued an official statement detailing the injury, indicating that Lewandowski sustained it during the team's last match against Villarreal. The statement confirmed that medical tests revealed a fracture in his left eyebrow bone, necessitating his exclusion from the squad for the match against Atlético Madrid.
The former Bayern Munich striker had come on as a substitute in Saturday’s match against Villarreal, scoring Barcelona’s fourth goal and contributing to the Spanish league leaders’ 4-1 victory, before the nature of his injury was announced the following day.
Barcelona faces a tough challenge in the second leg against Diego Simeone's side, as they seek to overturn their heavy defeat in the first leg. The Catalan team suffered a 4-0 loss in the match played between the two sides at the beginning of February.
In terms of playing time this season, Lewandowski (37 years old) has been playing a secondary role in Barcelona's lineup. The coaching staff often prefers Ferran Torres in the starting eleven, while the Polish striker remains on the bench for many matches, only to be brought on as a substitute depending on the flow of the game.
