Brazilian club Flamengo announced on Wednesday the appointment of Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim as their new manager, a move aimed at restructuring the team after a difficult start to the season. This appointment comes after the surprise dismissal of former coach Filipe Luis earlier this week, making Jardim the new face of the management of Brazil's most popular club.
Leonardo Jardim's trophy-laden career
Leonardo Jardim , 51, boasts
It's worth noting that Jardim is no stranger to winning titles; he etched his name in history when he led Monaco to the French league title in 2017, breaking Paris Saint-Germain's dominance at the time and introducing the world to stars like Kylian Mbappé. He also had a successful stint in the Arabian Gulf region between 2021 and 2025, guiding Al-Hilal to the 2021 AFC Champions League title and the 2022 Saudi Professional League title, in addition to winning the UAE Pro League with Shabab Al-Ahli in 2023.
Challenges of the Portuguese school in Rio de Janeiro
The appointment of Leonardo Jardim continues the trend among Brazilian clubs to rely on the Portuguese school of coaching, which has achieved remarkable success in recent years, most notably Jorge Jesus's historic stint with Flamengo. However, Jardim faces the significant challenge of restoring confidence within the dressing room after a period of instability.
Jardim had resigned from coaching Brazilian club Cruzeiro last December after just ten months, citing the need to protect his "physical and mental health." Now, he returns to the sport through Flamengo, the club with the largest budget in South America, taking over from Filipe Luis, who was dismissed despite a recent resounding 8-0 victory over Madureira, due to the loss of two important titles at the start of the season.
Results crisis and the search for stability
Flamengo's season didn't start ideally, putting immediate pressure on the new coach. The team lost the Brazilian Super Cup to Corinthians (0-2), suffered a painful defeat at home in the Maracanã, and lost the Recopa Sudamericana final to Argentina's Lanús (2-3). These results hastened Filipe Luís' departure, who bid farewell to the club via Instagram, saying: "I leave in peace, with my head held high and a clear conscience.".
Leonardo Jardim's experience and his ability to manage the stars to bring the team back to the path of continental and local championships, especially with the major challenges that await the team in the coming months.
