On Saturday evening, Jeddah witnessed a unique event combining sporting passion with social responsibility, as the "Environmental League" initiative was officially launched at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City Stadium. This launch was the result of a strategic collaboration between the Environmental Fund and the Friends of Football Players Association, with direct support from the Ministry of Sports, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, and the Saudi Professional League, in a move aimed at integrating sustainability concepts into the fabric of sports in the Kingdom.
The launch coincided with a football match between Al-Ittihad and Al-Shabab in the quarterfinals of the King's Cup, giving the initiative significant public momentum. Before kickoff, the areas surrounding the stadium witnessed a remarkable turnout at the environmental awareness booths, which provided fans with practical demonstrations of waste sorting and recycling, the importance of tree planting through seedlings, and interactive educational content aimed at families and children to instill environmental awareness from a young age.
Football stars in service of the environment
In a gesture of appreciation, the Environmental Association team, led by former international player and legend Mohammed Noor, along with Fahd Al-Dosari, the association's secretary-general, and Fawaz Al-Anzi, the official spokesperson for the Environmental Fund, honored a select group of fans who demonstrated a commitment to positive environmental behavior in the stands. This recognition aims to promote the concept of the "responsible fan" who contributes to maintaining the cleanliness of sports facilities.
For his part, Captain Majed Abdullah, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Football Players Charitable Association, emphasized the depth of the partnership between the sports and environmental sectors, noting that the initiative extends beyond the stadium. He stated, “Stadiums are not just places to cheer, but spaces where we instill values and leave a lasting impact for generations. The participation of fans in preserving the environment is a national duty we are all proud of, and the success of this initiative today marks the beginning of a beautiful path that connects sports with awareness and responsibility.”.
National context and future vision
This initiative cannot be separated from the broader context of the transformations taking place in Saudi Arabia under Vision 2030, particularly with regard to the "Green Saudi Arabia" initiative, which aims to increase vegetation cover and reduce carbon emissions. With its broad fan base and extensive media influence, sports provide an ideal platform to accelerate behavioral change within society regarding environmental issues.
This step is particularly important as the Kingdom prepares to host major international sporting events in the future, where environmental sustainability standards have become a prerequisite for organizing international tournaments. By familiarizing local fans with sorting and recycling practices within stadiums, the Kingdom is establishing a cultural infrastructure that aligns with global standards for green stadiums, further solidifying its position as a leading nation in organizing sustainable events.
It is worth mentioning that the “Environment League” initiative will not stop at this event, but will continue its tours during the upcoming matches in various cities of the Kingdom, with the aim of generalizing the experience and turning Saudi stadiums into a model to be emulated regionally and internationally in the field of sports sustainability.
