Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, announced an official decision to close the city's schools from January 19th until February 1st. This emergency measure comes as a result of the critical state of the energy infrastructure, following a series of intense Russian airstrikes targeting power plants and distribution networks, leading to severe shortages in electricity and heating supplies.
Klitschko explained via his Telegram account that this measure aims to reduce the load on the damaged electrical grid, noting that the authorities in Kyiv will also ration street lighting and economize on energy consumption in public facilities to ensure the continuity of vital services for citizens in light of the drop in temperatures.
Energy targeting strategy and the impact of winter
These developments come within the context of an ongoing Russian military strategy focused on targeting critical infrastructure in Ukraine, particularly energy facilities, as winter approaches.
