The King Salman Relief Center continues its water supply and environmental sanitation project in Al-Khokha, Yemen, providing clean water services to more than 16,000 beneficiaries to address the humanitarian crisis.

The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) continues its pivotal role in supporting the people of Yemen through its water supply and environmental sanitation project in Al-Khawkhah District, Al-Hudaydah Governorate. This project provided vital services to over 16,170 beneficiaries during January. It is part of a series of humanitarian initiatives aimed at improving living conditions and providing essential resources for those affected by the humanitarian crisis.

The general context of the crisis in Yemen

Yemen has been suffering for years from a complex humanitarian crisis that has severely damaged its infrastructure, particularly in the water and sanitation sectors. Al Hudaydah Governorate, including Al Khawkhah District, is among the hardest-hit areas, where the conflict has displaced large numbers of people and destroyed water networks, creating a breeding ground for waterborne diseases such as cholera. In this context, water supply and sanitation projects are of paramount importance, not only providing drinking water but also serving as a first line of defense for public health and preventing outbreaks of disease in displacement camps and host communities.

Details of the project's achievements and its direct impact

During January, the project achieved tangible results that directly contributed to improving the lives of thousands of families. These efforts included the following:

  • Pumping 4,774,000 liters of water suitable for domestic use, ensuring the availability of water for hygiene and daily needs.
  • Pumping 974,000 liters of clean drinking water is vital for preventing dehydration and malnutrition.
  • 815 waste removal operations were carried out in the camps for displaced persons, contributing to maintaining a healthy and clean environment.
  • More than 93 cubic meters of sewage water were pumped out and dried, to reduce environmental pollution and the risk of disease outbreaks.
  • Maintenance of 16 temporary toilets to ensure their sustainability and service to beneficiaries.
  • Conducting a water quality test to ensure its safety and compliance with health standards.

The regional and international importance of relief efforts

This project reflects the leading humanitarian role played by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through its relief arm, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, in responding to global crises. By providing sustained support in vital sectors such as water, the Kingdom not only contributes to alleviating immediate human suffering but also promotes long-term stability. Ensuring access to clean water and sanitation is one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and projects like this highlight the Kingdom’s commitment to international agreements and its support for regional stability by addressing the root causes of health and environmental crises in conflict zones.
