Saudi Arabia delivers urgent medical supplies to the Hadhramaut Coast Health Authority through the King Salman Relief Center to combat cholera, as part of a project aimed at protecting more than one million Yemenis.

As part of ongoing humanitarian efforts to support the health sector in Yemen, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center delivered a new shipment of various medical supplies to the Ministry of Public Health and Population office in the Hadramawt coast. This strategic step aims to maximize the preparedness of health facilities and enhance their capacity for a rapid and effective response to suspected and confirmed cases of cholera, within the framework of the "Emergency Response to Combat Cholera in Yemen" project.

Enhancing health preparedness in the face of epidemics

During the handover ceremony, the Secretary-General of the Hadramawt Governorate Local Council, Saleh Aboud Al-Amqi, praised this urgent humanitarian intervention, describing it as pivotal at a critical time. Al-Amqi emphasized that this aid directly contributes to containing the epidemic and limiting its spread in the targeted areas. He noted that the Saudi support is not limited to providing in-kind assistance, but rather represents a comprehensive package aimed at improving the operational efficiency of health facilities that are under significant strain.

The Yemeni official expressed his thanks and appreciation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the King Salman Relief Center, for the continued support that strengthens the resilience of the Yemeni health system in the face of recurring epidemic crises.

Context of the health crisis in Yemen

This support comes at a time when Yemen’s health sector is facing immense challenges as a result of years of conflict, which have damaged health infrastructure and led to a severe shortage of medical supplies and qualified personnel. Cholera is one of the major health challenges Yemen has faced in recent years, with weak water and sanitation networks causing previous outbreaks. This makes urgent response measures crucial to preventing a recurrence of widespread epidemics.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, through its humanitarian arm, is working to bridge this gap through multiple programs that include supporting hospitals, providing medicines, and operating health centers in various Yemeni governorates, reflecting a firm commitment to the brotherly Yemeni people.

Project details and expected impact

The emergency response project targets the areas most affected and vulnerable to the spread of the epidemic. Its primary aim is to reduce mortality and infection rates through a series of preventative and treatment measures. Key features of this project include:

  • Establish and deploy specialized medical teams to examine and monitor travelers.
  • Covering air and land ports in vital governorates such as Aden and Hadhramaut.
  • Providing healthcare and preventive services to approximately 1,153,000 beneficiaries .

This project is of great importance not only at the local level in Hadramawt, but its impact extends to regional health security, as controlling epidemics at border crossings and gathering points contributes to preventing the transmission of infection between regions and cities, thus enhancing the stability of the general health situation in Yemen.
