Riyadh Airports Company, the operator of King Khalid International Airport (RUH), announced the launch of a comprehensive development process for the inter-terminal connection area, in a strategic step aimed at creating a qualitative shift in the passenger experience and raising the operational efficiency of the airport, in line with the ambitious targets of Saudi Vision 2030 and the National Aviation Strategy.
Historical background and strategic context
King Khalid International Airport, which opened in 1983, is one of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s most important air gateways and the gateway of the capital, Riyadh, to the world. Over the decades, the airport has witnessed steady growth in passenger numbers and air traffic, making it a key hub in the regional and international air transport network. This new development project comes within the context of the Kingdom’s comprehensive national transformation, as the National Aviation Strategy aims to double passenger numbers to 330 million annually by 2030 and transform the Kingdom into a global logistics hub connecting three continents.
Details and objectives of the development project
The development process is based on three main pillars: increasing operational efficiency, streamlining the passenger experience, and facilitating seamless transit between international and domestic flights. The first phase of the project is scheduled to begin from February 16th to 25th, with work aimed at achieving tangible results in record time.
The project's ambitious goals include increasing the airport's total passenger capacity from a projected 42 million in 2025 to 56 million by the end of 2026, representing a significant 33% increase. The project also aims to shorten the distances between terminals and reduce travel times, facilitating smoother connections for passengers on connecting flights, with the goal of increasing the number of transit passengers to 7.5 million annually.
Importance and expected impact
This project is of paramount importance on multiple levels. Locally, citizens and residents will experience a direct improvement in their travel experience through faster procedures and more modern and comfortable facilities. Regionally, the development of King Khalid International Airport enhances its competitive position as a leading aviation hub in the Middle East, capable of attracting more international airlines and transit passengers.
Internationally, the project represents a practical step towards achieving the goals of Vision 2030 in the tourism and logistics sectors. A modern and efficient airport is a cornerstone for attracting tourists, investors, and businesspeople, and supports the Kingdom's plans to become a global tourist destination. Airport management confirmed that this step is part of a broader plan to develop infrastructure and improve the quality of services provided, ensuring a world-class travel experience befitting the status of Riyadh and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
