King Fahd Causeway toll updates for 2024
The King Fahd Causeway Authority announced the implementation of the new financial structure for crossing fees on the bridge linking the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Kingdom of Bahrain, effective Wednesday morning, February 21, 2024. This step comes within the framework of ongoing development efforts to improve the passenger experience and raise operational efficiency. The new regulations include an adjustment to vehicle fees, along with the launch of a package of smart discount packages of up to 40%, and the exemption of certain social categories from the increase.
Historical background and strategic importance of the bridge
The King Fahd Causeway, officially opened in 1986, is one of the region's most prominent engineering projects and a vital artery connecting the two sister kingdoms. Spanning approximately 25 kilometers over the waters of the Arabian Gulf, the bridge has served more than just as a land crossing; it has become a symbol of fraternal ties and has deepened social, cultural, and economic relations between the two peoples. Since its opening, the bridge has directly contributed to boosting trade and tourism, facilitating the daily movement of thousands of citizens, residents, and visitors, making it the busiest land crossing in the region, especially during weekends and peak seasons.
Details of the new fee structure
According to the updated pricing, the toll for one-way vehicles is now as follows:
- Private cars and motorcycles: 35 Saudi Riyals.
- Minibuses: 55 Saudi Riyals.
- Large buses: 70 Saudi Riyals.
- Trucks: 7 Saudi Riyals per ton.
The organization took into account the humanitarian and social dimensions in its decision, as three main categories were protected from any additional financial burdens, keeping the fees at their previous levels without change for both “students” and “people with disabilities,” in appreciation of their circumstances and their frequent connections to the bridge.
Smart packages and discounts to encourage regular travel
In conjunction with the implementation of the new fees, the organization launched a suite of smart packages through its official “Jisr” app, aiming to provide flexible savings options for frequent and regular travelers. Leading these packages is the “Frequent Flyer Package,” offering a 40% discount for SAR 850, valid for one month or 40 crossings, catering to daily and semi-daily travelers. The organization also introduced the “Frequent Flyer Package” with a 20% discount for SAR 1,120, valid for a full year or 40 crossings, making it a long-term, cost-effective option. The regulations also catered to short-term travelers, offering a “Round Trip Package” with a 15% discount for SAR 60, valid for one week from the first crossing.
Expected impact and trend towards digital transformation
These upgrades aim to streamline traffic flow and reduce waiting times at toll gates, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, both of which focus on digital transformation and enhancing service efficiency. Parallel digital services, such as the “Absher Travel” platform, further support this trend, enabling travelers to pay bridge tolls and secure vehicle insurance in advance of their arrival at the crossing. These measures are expected to collectively enhance the travel experience, bolster tourism and business sectors between the two countries, and solidify the King Fahd Causeway’s position as a modern and advanced gateway reflecting the deep-rooted Saudi-Bahraini relations.
