King Abdulaziz International Airport has achieved a new milestone, adding to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's record of accomplishments in the aviation sector. It secured third place globally in the category of mega airports serving between 50 and 60 million passengers annually, according to the 2026 Skytrax World Airport Awards. The official announcement of this prestigious international achievement was made during the Passenger Terminal Expo held in London. Furthermore, the airport jumped 17 places in the overall ranking to reach 27th globally, and also earned the fifth position as one of the world's most improved airports in terms of service levels.

The historical development journey of King Abdulaziz International Airport

Since its official opening in 1981, the airport has served as the primary air gateway to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, specifically to Jeddah, the country's economic and commercial capital. The airport has undergone numerous expansion and development phases to accommodate the steady increase in passenger numbers, particularly as it is the main gateway for millions of pilgrims traveling to the Grand Mosque in Mecca. In recent years, the airport experienced a major transformation with the opening of Terminal 1, designed according to the latest international standards to provide an exceptional travel experience. This has paved the way for the airport's significant progress in international rankings related to aviation quality and passenger facilities.

Quality of passenger experience and efficiency of operational processes

Eng. Mazen bin Mohammed Johar, CEO of Jeddah Airports Company, affirmed that this remarkable progress reflects the company's ongoing commitment to enhancing the quality of services provided to passengers. He stated that it is the result of integrated efforts among all entities operating at the airport. He explained that the company is proud of these achievements, which reinforce the airport's position as an exceptional regional and global hub. This accomplishment is an extension of Jeddah Airports Company's efforts to develop the efficiency of operational processes since assuming management and operations in 2022. This development has directly contributed to improving performance indicators related to the passenger journey, thus strengthening the airport's role as a primary gateway to the Kingdom, particularly in serving pilgrims arriving to perform Hajj and Umrah from around the world, and facilitating their procedures with ease and peace of mind.

Economic impact and support for the goals of Saudi Vision 2030

This achievement is of paramount importance and has a far-reaching impact at the local, regional, and international levels. Locally, the airport's top ranking contributes to attracting more foreign investment and stimulating tourism and trade in Jeddah and the Kingdom as a whole. Regionally and internationally, it solidifies the Kingdom's position as a global logistics hub connecting the three continents of Asia, Africa, and Europe. Jeddah Airports Company continues to implement aviation sector programs stemming from the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, in line with the ambitions of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to reach 330 million passengers annually. Through these ranking leaps, the airport aims to continue modernizing its infrastructure and adopting smart technologies to ensure smooth operations and provide the highest levels of passenger comfort, making it a model to be emulated in the global air transport industry.
