Japanese legend Kazuyoshi Miura has signed with third-division side Fukushima United at the age of 58, marking his 41st season in professional football. Learn more about the deal.

In a unique sporting phenomenon on a global scale, Japanese football legend Kazuyoshi Miura proved that age is just a number, as he signed a new contract with a team active in the Japanese third division at the age of fifty-eight, confirming that his passion for the beautiful game is still as intense as it was in his early days.

Japanese club Fukushima United announced on Tuesday the signing of Miura, nicknamed "King Kazu," on loan until June. This move marks Miura's 41st season as a professional footballer, in a career that is considered one of the longest in the history of the sport, especially as he will turn 59 next February.

A passion that defies time

In his first comments after signing, the former Japanese international said in an official statement released by his new club: "My passion for football hasn't changed, no matter how old I get." He added defiantly, "I'm very grateful for the opportunity to play in Fukushima, and I will fight hard as a Fukushima United player. Let's make history together.".

Miura spent last season with Atletico Suzuka in the fourth division, making seven appearances, but the team struggled and was relegated to the regional leagues after finishing second-to-last and losing in the relegation playoff. His move to Fukushima represents a return to a higher level of competition in the third division.

A historic journey that began in Brazil

To understand the greatness of what "King Kazu" does, one must go back decades. Miura played his first professional match with the prestigious Brazilian team Santos in 1986, at a time when Japan did not yet have a professional league. His experience in Brazil helped hone his unique talent, which he later carried to European and Asian stadiums.

Miura is considered one of the pioneers who paved the way for Japanese players to reach international status, as he was the first Japanese player to play professionally in the Italian league (Serie A) with Genoa. He also had various professional experiences in Croatia with Dinamo Zagreb, and in Australia and Portugal, which gave him extensive international experience.

Icon of the Japanese national team

On the international level, Miura has a distinguished record with the "Samurai" national team, having made his international debut in 1990. Despite scoring 55 goals in 89 international matches, his career witnessed a dramatic moment with his surprising exclusion from the final squad participating in the 1998 World Cup in France, Japan's first participation in the World Cup, a decision that sparked widespread controversy at the time.

Miura's continued presence on the field until the age of sixty is not just a sporting achievement, but an inspiring message about physical discipline, professional passion, and the ability to adapt to the changes of time, making him a living icon respected and appreciated by sports fans around the world.
