King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) maintains its position as the top Arab university in the Times Higher Education 2025 rankings for the third year running, confirming Saudi Arabia’s leadership in research and innovation.

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has cemented its leading position regionally and globally, after winning first place in the Times Higher Education (THE) Arab Region University Rankings for 2025. This achievement comes for the third year in a row, confirming the continued academic and research excellence of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in international forums.

Saudi achievement at the Times Summit in Jordan

These impressive results were announced during the Times Higher Education Arab States University Summit 2025, hosted by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The summit witnessed a significant turnout of higher education leaders and decision-makers, highlighting the rapid development of universities in the region. KAUST's continued leadership for three consecutive cycles (2023, 2024, 2025) is a testament to the success of its institutional strategy and the quality of its academic output.

Classification criteria and indicators of excellence

This ranking did not come about arbitrarily, but was based on a rigorous and comprehensive methodology adopted by the Times Higher Education organization. The assessment included 20 key performance indicators covering vital areas including:

  • Quality of the educational environment: Providing advanced infrastructure that supports academic achievement.
  • Research environment: Volume of research, income generated from it, and academic reputation.
  • Research quality: This is measured by the number of citations and its global impact.
  • Industry connection: The extent to which the university is able to transfer knowledge and register patents.
  • International perspective: Attracting talent and cross-border research collaboration.

KAUST achieved perfect or near-perfect scores in most of these indicators, outperforming its peers in the region, reflecting a world-class research environment.

A key driver of Saudi Vision 2030

This achievement takes on particular significance when viewed within the context of the Kingdom's major national transformations. King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) does not operate in isolation from national priorities; rather, it is a cornerstone of the research, development, and innovation (RDI) ecosystem launched by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince. The university's research directly contributes to supporting the diversification of the national economy and the transition to a knowledge-based economy by providing innovative solutions to challenges in energy, water, the environment, and food security.

Research excellence and global recognition

Commenting on this achievement, Professor Edward Byrne, the university's president, emphasized that this ranking reflects the dedication of the faculty and students. Further bolstering the credibility of this excellence is the selection of 16 faculty members for Clarivate Analytics' list of the most cited researchers in 2025. This number reflects the profound impact of the university's research within the global scientific community, where it has become a key resource for scientists worldwide.

A promising future for scientific research

KAUST continues to strengthen its international and local partnerships to translate research into tangible products and technologies that serve humanity. By attracting the world's best minds and providing a nurturing environment for innovation, the university ensures that the Kingdom remains at the forefront of nations influencing the future of science and technology.
