In a move reflecting the rapid development of the healthcare sector in Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah Medical City in Mecca has achieved a remarkable medical milestone, successfully performing 100 precise robotic surgeries in a short period. This represents the fastest launch of robotic surgery programs within the Ministry of Health and one of the fastest regionally recorded for 2025, positioning the city at the forefront of medical institutions in the Middle East in this field.
Achievement details in numbers and dates
Reports issued by the medical city indicate that this advanced medical initiative officially commenced on May 19, 2025, with the number of surgeries subsequently witnessing a significant increase, reflecting the readiness of the infrastructure and the competence of the national workforce. The surgeries encompassed specialized and vital fields, with gynecological oncology surgeries accounting for the largest share, performing 52 operations since its launch on May 26, 2025, thus achieving a record for the fastest launch of this specialty in the Middle East.
The list also included 23 operations in chest surgeries, and 20 operations in the urology specialty, whose program was launched on July 1, 2025. It was not limited to that, but extended to include complex heart surgeries with 3 operations, and colon surgeries that began in mid-December 2025, which confirms the comprehensiveness of the city’s operational plan.
The robotic surgery revolution: unparalleled precision and faster recovery
Robotic surgery represents a significant advancement in modern medicine. It utilizes precise robotic arms controlled remotely by the surgeon via a sophisticated control unit that provides a magnified, three-dimensional view. This technology is distinguished by its ability to access delicate areas within the human body that are difficult to reach with traditional surgery or even conventional endoscopes, thus reducing the size of surgical incisions and minimizing bleeding and pain associated with procedures.
From a medical standpoint, the use of these technologies directly impacts the patient experience, as it contributes to reducing the length of stay in the hospital, accelerating the pace of recovery and return to normal life, which is in line with the highest global standards of quality and patient safety to which King Abdullah Medical City is committed.
Alignment with the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and the health transformation
This achievement is not an isolated event, but rather a core component of the Health Sector Transformation Program, one of the programs under the Kingdom's Vision 2030. This program aims to facilitate access to healthcare services, improve their quality and efficiency, and enhance preventative measures against health risks. The localization of advanced technologies such as robotic surgery in Makkah reinforces the Kingdom's position as a leading healthcare hub in the region and underscores the leadership's commitment to providing cutting-edge scientific advancements to serve citizens, residents, and pilgrims.
King Abdullah Medical City continues to move forward with expanding these surgeries, based on a clear strategy for medical innovation, staff training, and equipment modernization, to ensure the sustainability of providing specialized services that rival those of international medical centers.
