The Portuguese coach of Sharjah FC, Jose Morais, commented with high sportsmanship and tactical realism on his team’s loss to their guest, Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia, in the Gulf summit that brought the two teams together as part of the sixth round of the league stage of the AFC Champions League Elite Championship, which was held at Sharjah Stadium amidst a remarkable public presence.
In the press conference that followed the match, Morais was keen to praise his players' performance despite the result, saying: "I congratulate the Sharjah players on the great level they showed during the team's match against Al Hilal, and I also congratulate the opponent on winning the match; they were able to score and decide the match. It was a beautiful and exciting match, and I think everyone enjoyed the technical level presented.".
The Portuguese coach also spoke about the atmosphere created by the fans during the match, praising the great support the team received, saying: "The atmosphere in the stadium was absolutely fantastic, and the fans gave the match a special and enthusiastic character, and I thank them very much for their presence and continuous support. I am also happy to see Al-Hilal fans, and the high level of sportsmanship that prevailed between the two teams, and I hope that this will continue in our stadiums in the future.".
Context of the confrontation and the historical relationship
Morais’s statements are of particular importance given his historical background with Al-Hilal, as the Portuguese coach had previously led the Saudi “Leader” for a short period in 2021, during which he succeeded in leading them to win the Saudi Professional League title, which explains the mutual respect and cordiality that appeared in his statements towards the Saudi club and its fans, and towards the strong competition imposed by facing a team the size of Al-Hilal, which is experienced continentally and has won the most Asian titles.
Qualification scenarios and Sharjah's future in the elite league
Regarding the team's future in the continental tournament under its new "elite" format, Moraes stressed that the loss is not the end of the road, emphasizing the importance of the remaining matches. He explained, "There are six points left that we desperately want to secure in order to maintain our chances of qualifying for the next round (the round of 16). We have enough time to prepare the team and correct our mistakes to compete strongly for advancement.".
Morais concluded his remarks with a realistic tone, blending hope with hard work, refusing to make unrealistic promises. He stated, "I won't promise qualification because I can't predict the future, but I promise continuous hard work to achieve this goal." These statements come at a crucial juncture in the tournament, as Sharjah strives to secure its place among the top eight in the West Zone, amidst fierce competition that demands complete focus in the remaining decisive rounds.
