The Jeddah Municipality announced a major achievement in infrastructure maintenance, having repaired over 7 million square meters of roads and streets in the city last year. This accomplishment is part of ongoing efforts to improve quality of life and enhance the efficiency of the road network, in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which prioritizes the development of Saudi cities and the improvement of the urban landscape.
Strategic background to the importance of Jeddah's roads
Jeddah is considered the gateway to the Two Holy Mosques and a vital economic and commercial hub on the Red Sea coast. With the rapid urban expansion and population growth it has witnessed over the past decades, its infrastructure, particularly its road network, has been under considerable strain. Therefore, regular maintenance and continuous development have become essential to ensure smooth traffic flow and provide a safe and comfortable environment for both residents and visitors. These projects not only serve the people of Jeddah but also support logistical, commercial, and tourism activities nationwide.
Comprehensive details of maintenance work
According to the annual report issued by the General Directorate of Operation and Maintenance at the Secretariat, the work carried out during the past year included the following:
- Road maintenance: A total area of 7,044,513 square meters of main and secondary streets throughout the governorate has been treated and resurfaced.
- Sidewalk maintenance: Maintenance and rehabilitation work was carried out on sidewalks with an area of 299,292 square meters, which contributes to improving pedestrian traffic and enhancing safety.
- Lighting maintenance: The plan included the maintenance and upgrading of 56,619 lighting poles, with the aim of increasing the efficiency of lighting in streets and residential neighborhoods and reducing energy consumption.
The Secretariat explained that these works were carried out within the projects agency’s programs, with the application of precise field follow-up mechanisms to ensure the quality of implementation and to address observations immediately, taking into account the priorities of approved projects and the needs of different neighborhoods.
Expected impact and future outlook
These projects directly impact the lives of citizens and residents by reducing traffic congestion, lowering accident rates, and improving the city's overall appearance. Regionally, these efforts reinforce Jeddah's position as a modern city with robust infrastructure, capable of hosting international events and accommodating the increasing influx of tourists, pilgrims, and Umrah performers. The Jeddah Municipality affirmed its commitment to continuing its periodic maintenance programs and developing its operational systems to support infrastructure sustainability and enhance the efficiency of municipal services, thus realizing its vision of Jeddah as one of the world's best cities to live in.
