A step towards digital transformation in infrastructure management
The Jeddah Municipality announced the launch of the advanced “Maximo” system, a global asset management system for stormwater drainage projects. This significant step is part of the municipality’s ongoing efforts to develop its operational and maintenance systems, enhance operational efficiency, and strengthen the readiness of vital infrastructure to meet climate challenges, thereby contributing to a better quality of life for residents and visitors.
Historical context: From crisis response to proactive management
The efforts to develop Jeddah's stormwater drainage network were not a spur-of-the-moment decision, but rather the result of a strategic response to significant challenges the city has faced in the past. The devastating floods of 2009 marked a turning point, revealing the urgent need for a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade. Since then, Saudi Arabia has invested billions of riyals in massive flood mitigation projects, including the construction of dams, drainage canals, and giant tunnels. Today's launch of the "Maximo" system represents the next phase of these efforts, transitioning from the construction phase to the smart and sustainable management of existing assets to ensure their long-term effectiveness.
System objectives and operational impact
The Deputy Secretary for the Stormwater Drainage Program, Ghassan bin Abdullah Al-Zahrani, explained that the “Maximo” system aims to radically improve work procedures and increase operational efficiency. He added that the system provides an integrated digital platform that allows for the accurate and reliable tracking of assets and projects, enabling efficient asset lifecycle management and supporting data-driven decision-making. The system will enhance the program agency's ability to monitor drainage networks, pumping stations, and related facilities by standardizing operational data and linking it to field technical teams, thereby increasing response times and improving coordination among relevant departments.
Strategic importance that transcends local boundaries
The importance of this project extends beyond the local level of Jeddah, encompassing national and regional dimensions. Locally, the system contributes to protecting lives and property and enhances residents' sense of security, directly aligning with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 to build a vibrant society and sustainable cities. Nationally, securing Jeddah, the gateway to the Two Holy Mosques and one of the Kingdom's most important economic and logistical hubs, ensures the continuity of business and trade. Regionally, this project provides a pioneering model for other coastal cities in the region facing similar climatic challenges and highlights the Kingdom's commitment to adopting the latest global technologies to address urban challenges.
Advanced technical features
Maximo is a leading global enterprise asset management solution, providing advanced tools for planning and scheduling preventive and emergency maintenance, managing work orders and spare parts, and minimizing unplanned downtime. The system also leverages artificial intelligence and data analytics to identify operational patterns and provide proactive indicators that enhance predictive maintenance efficiency and ensure maximum readiness for weather events.
