Jeddah Buses launched 7 new routes to connect the city's neighborhoods with the historic Al-Balad area during Ramadan, with the aim of solving the parking crisis and facilitating access for visitors to enjoy the heritage atmosphere.

A proactive initiative to solve the parking crisis in historic Jeddah

In a proactive move aimed at ending traffic congestion and parking difficulties, the Jeddah Municipality, represented by the Jeddah Transport Company, announced a comprehensive operational plan to serve visitors to Jeddah's historic district (Al-Balad) during the nights of Ramadan. The plan includes allocating seven vital routes for public buses, connecting various parts of the city to its vibrant historical heart.

The historical context and importance of “the country” in Ramadan

Jeddah's historic district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, is a major destination for residents and visitors alike, especially during Ramadan, when it takes on a unique atmosphere that blends spirituality with heritage. The "Balad" (the old city), home to over 650 historical buildings, 36 ancient mosques, and traditional souks (markets), attracts thousands of visitors daily, creating significant traffic congestion and immense pressure on the limited parking available. This high population density has hampered traffic flow and negatively impacted visitors' enjoyment of the district's unique attractions and events.

Integrated route network for easy access

The seven-route network aims to provide smart and convenient transportation solutions, covering a wide geographical area to serve the largest possible number of residents. Buses depart from key points in the governorate, all terminating at stations near the city center. The routes include the following:

  • A route that starts from the Al-Taysir and Al-Khalidiyah neighborhoods.
  • A route that serves the central vegetable market area.
  • A route that starts from Al Marwa 3 neighborhood.
  • A dedicated lane for those coming from the direction of the National Guard Hospital.
  • A route that connects the industrial city with the historical area.
  • Direct route from the Sulaymaniyah district.

This organized network ensures a smooth and safe flow of visitors, allowing them to experience the spiritual and heritage atmosphere with ease and convenience, without the hassle of searching for parking.

Expected impact and support for the Kingdom's Vision 2030

The importance of this initiative extends beyond simply solving a temporary traffic problem, positively impacting several levels. Locally, it contributes to improving the quality of life for Jeddah residents and reducing carbon emissions resulting from traffic congestion. It also supports businesses and events in the Al-Balad district by facilitating customer access. Regionally and internationally, this step enhances Jeddah's position as a leading tourist and cultural destination and demonstrates the Kingdom's commitment to developing infrastructure to serve the tourism and heritage sectors, directly aligning with the goals of Vision 2030, which aims to enrich the visitor experience and preserve the national cultural heritage. The Municipality has encouraged all residents and visitors to take advantage of this modern system, noting that details and schedules for trips and tickets can be viewed electronically through the "Jeddah Bus" application or the company's official website.
