As part of the ongoing efforts by security and regulatory authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to protect national resources and ensure compliance with regulations, the coastal patrols of the Border Guard in Jeddah Governorate in the Makkah Region were able to apprehend a citizen who violated the security and safety regulations for those practicing maritime activities.
The incident occurred when patrols spotted the citizen fishing without the necessary permits and using prohibited fishing gear that poses a threat to the marine environment. The relevant authorities have initiated legal proceedings against the violator, prior to referring him to the appropriate bodies for the application of the penalties stipulated by law.
Protecting the marine environment: a national priority within Vision 2030
This initiative comes within a broader context reflecting Saudi Arabia’s growing interest in protecting its marine environment, particularly in the Red Sea region, which is one of the world’s richest areas in terms of biodiversity and coral reefs. The Kingdom’s Vision 2030 places paramount importance on environmental sustainability, and Saudi Arabia has launched pioneering initiatives such as the “Saudi Green Initiative,” which aims, among other things, to increase the number of protected areas and conserve wildlife.
Overfishing or the use of illegal fishing gear is not merely an administrative violation; it is a direct threat to ecological balance. Prohibited gear often destroys coral reefs that take decades to develop, depletes fish stocks, and kills juvenile fish, jeopardizing food security and environmental sustainability for future generations.
The vital role of the border guard in protecting resources
This event highlights the pivotal role of the Saudi Border Guard, which extends beyond the traditional concept of border security to encompass the protection of the nation's natural and economic resources. Border Guard teams work around the clock to monitor the coasts and territorial waters, ensuring compliance with regulations designed to guarantee the safety of users and protect the environment.
The regulations governing maritime activities in the Kingdom emphasize the need to obtain the necessary licenses before engaging in any maritime activity, whether for fishing or recreation, in order to ensure that the concerned authorities know the identity of the visitors and their locations to ensure their safety first, and to regulate fishing operations in accordance with the seasons and permitted quantities.
A call for social responsibility and reporting
In closing, the General Directorate of Border Guards reiterated its call to all citizens and residents to fully comply with regulations and instructions pertaining to the marine environment. It urged everyone to recognize their national responsibility to protect living aquatic resources and to promptly report any violations or incidents of harm to the environment or wildlife.
Violations can be reported easily and confidentially by calling the designated emergency numbers: 911 in the Makkah, Riyadh, and Eastern regions, and 994, 999, and 996 in the rest of the Kingdom. This collaborative approach underscores that protecting the nation and its resources is a shared responsibility between official authorities and members of society.
