Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany delivered good news to the Bavarian club's fans on Friday, confirming the imminent return of young star Jamal Musiala to the pitch. The talented playmaker is expected to be included in the squad for Saturday's highly anticipated Bundesliga clash against RB Leipzig.
The end of the long injury nightmare
This return comes after a grueling seven-month absence, during which the 22-year-old German international endured a difficult period away from the pitch. Musiala suffered a horrific injury – a broken metatarsal and a dislocated ankle – following a heavy challenge and collision with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma during the two teams' Club World Cup match in early July.
Before that unfortunate moment, Musiala was having one of his best seasons ever, establishing himself as a key pillar in the Bavarian giant's lineup, scoring 21 goals and providing eight assists in all competitions, directly contributing to Bayern's league title win.
Record numbers for the Kompany squad
Despite the team missing their star player for an extended period, the Bavarian machine hasn't stopped turning. Under Kompany's leadership, Bayern Munich is enjoying exceptional form, sitting atop the Bundesliga table with impressive performances. The team further solidified their lead with a resounding 3-1 victory over Cologne last Wednesday, setting a new club record.
The team managed to collect 47 points in the first half of the season, equaling the previous record set by the golden generation led by Pep Guardiola in the 2013-2014 season, but Kompany's squad was superior on goal difference, as the team scored 66 goals in this stage, a new attacking record that confirms the team's attacking ferocity even in the absence of Musiala.
The philosophy of gradual return
In the pre-match press conference, Kompany said, "If things go according to plan in training today, Jamal will be with the team." The Belgian coach added, describing the player's mental state, "It's clear that Jamal has tremendous positive energy after emerging from this dark period. I always tell the players that returning after being away makes you appreciate every moment on the pitch, and Jamal feels that now.".
However, Kompany urged patience and cautioned against raising expectations too high upon their return, pointing out that Musiala and his teammate Alphonso Davies, who has also regained his fitness, need time. He explained, "I don't expect them to decide matches immediately. The goal now is to develop good chemistry and deliver a reasonable performance, gradually reaching 100% fitness. The important thing is to take the next step steadily.".
Important milestones on the horizon
Musiala's return is doubly important not only for Bayern Munich, who are preparing to host Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League next Wednesday, but also for the German national team, which is counting heavily on Musiala's talent in its journey towards the 2026 World Cup. The match against Leipzig is a real test of the team's readiness to have its star player back in major, highly competitive matches.
