The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia places great importance on the comfort and safety of pilgrims. In this context, the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing revealed statistics reflecting the scale of the efforts undertaken, with more than 41,395 inspection tours conducted in Mecca and Medina from the beginning of Ramadan until the 25th of the month of Ramadan 1447 AH. This proactive and ongoing step is part of the Ministry's strategy to enhance health and municipal oversight and ensure the safety of all food and commercial activities, thereby raising the level of compliance with municipal regulations in the two holy cities, which witness the arrival of millions of pilgrims and visitors.
Mobilizing resources to serve the pilgrims during religious seasons
Historically, the holy month of Ramadan is one of the most important religious seasons, witnessing an immense influx of people to Mecca and Medina, far exceeding ordinary days. With the increasing number of Muslims arriving from all corners of the earth to perform Umrah and visit the holy sites, the responsibilities of Saudi government agencies multiply. For decades, the Kingdom has consistently dedicated all its material and human resources to ensuring the smooth flow of services. These intensive oversight efforts fall under a broader framework aligned with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to enrich the religious and cultural experience of pilgrims and Umrah performers, and to provide world-class services that guarantee their safety and health from the moment they arrive until their departure.
Results of inspection tours in Mecca and Medina: The Holy City as a model
In detailing the figures, the Ministry explained that the Holy Capital Municipality undertook the largest share of these tasks, conducting 36,324 inspection tours during the same period. These tours included 19,103 dedicated to thorough health inspections of food establishments and restaurants, in addition to 17,221 comprehensive inspections of commercial markets. The efforts were not limited to inspections alone, but also extended to environmental aspects; the Municipality efficiently handled more than 263,000 tons of municipal waste. These extensive operations are part of a comprehensive system of cleaning and environmental sanitation services, covering various neighborhoods of Mecca and the central areas surrounding the Grand Mosque, thus directly contributing to improving the urban landscape and maintaining a safe and healthy environment for the millions of pilgrims.
Tighter controls on markets in Taiba Al-Tayyiba
Moving to Medina, the efforts were no less decisive, with the municipality conducting 5,071 field visits and inspection tours. These tasks were divided into 2,879 health inspection tours and 2,192 tours of markets and shopping centers. To ensure the highest quality standards, specialized teams collected and examined 1,107 samples of food products sold in the markets to fully verify their compliance with health requirements and their safety for human consumption, thus preventing any violations that could affect the health of visitors.
Regional and international impact of successful operational plans
The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing's success in conducting this large number of inspection tours carries profound implications and far-reaching effects. Domestically, this work enhances consumer confidence in local markets and protects the national economy from unethical business practices. Regionally and internationally, these achievements reflect the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's exceptional capabilities in crowd management and providing healthcare and environmental services during peak times. The Ministry affirms that these operational plans for Ramadan primarily aim to improve the efficiency of field monitoring and enhance the quality of municipal services provided to pilgrims, leaving a lasting positive impression on visitors and reflecting the Kingdom's honorable image in serving Islam and Muslims.
