“Atomic Energy”: Iran’s nuclear facilities are safe after the recent strikes

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, confirmed that Iran's nuclear facilities were not damaged by the recent attacks, noting that attempts to communicate with Tehran to ensure safety are ongoing.

Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy (IAEA), confirmed on Monday that the UN agency had detected no signs of damage to Iranian nuclear facilities as a result of the recent strikes. These assurances were intended to allay growing international concerns about the potential for radioactive leaks or environmental disasters stemming from the military escalation in the region.

IAEA assurances amid lack of Iranian response

At the start of a special session of the IAEA Board of Governors dedicated to discussing developments in the Iranian nuclear file, Grossi explained that the agency's teams are closely monitoring the situation. However, he clearly pointed to a significant challenge facing the inspectors' work, stating that "efforts to contact Iranian nuclear regulatory bodies have continued without a response to date." The Director General expressed his hope that "this indispensable channel of communication will be re-established as soon as possible," emphasizing that the breakdown in communication hinders the agency's ability to provide full and up-to-date assurances to the international community.

The context of nuclear tension and the path of international oversight

These developments cannot be separated from the complex historical context of the relationship between Tehran and the IAEA. Since the United States withdrew from the nuclear agreement (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) in 2018, relations have been increasingly strained, with Iran gradually reducing its nuclear commitments and increasing its uranium enrichment levels. Sensitive facilities such as Natanz and Fordow have long been a focus of international attention, as the IAEA strives to maintain an acceptable level of oversight to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program, despite recent restrictions imposed by Tehran on the work of international inspectors.

Regional and international implications for facility safety

Ensuring the safety of nuclear facilities is of paramount strategic importance that extends far beyond Iran's borders. Regionally, the preservation of these sites spares the Middle East from potentially catastrophic environmental and health risks that could last for years. Internationally, any direct targeting of nuclear infrastructure would be considered a violation of international norms and could trigger an unprecedented nuclear arms race. Grossi's call to restore communication channels remains a warning sign, as continuous technical dialogue is the only safeguard against any miscalculation that could plunge the region into a wider confrontation with nuclear dimensions.
