The Haramain High-Speed Railway is one of the most prominent achievements in the transportation sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Its operational program during the holy month of Ramadan exemplified the efficiency of transporting millions of passengers between Mecca and Medina. With its punctuality, the train successfully accommodated the high volume of visitors, facilitating their movement between the two holy cities quickly, easily, and safely. The operational plan included more than 3,662 trips during Ramadan, providing over 1.7 million seats to serve travelers, visitors, and pilgrims.
A qualitative leap in the history of transportation in Mecca and Medina
Since its official opening in 2018, the Haramain High-Speed Railway revolutionized public transportation in the Kingdom. Historically, the journey for pilgrims between Mecca and Medina took many hours via traditional land routes, posing a significant physical and time burden. With the launch of this mega-project, one of the fastest trains in the region, travel time has been reduced to approximately two hours, with an operating speed of 300 kilometers per hour. This historic development has not only shortened distances but has also contributed to strengthening the infrastructure of the Saudi transportation sector in line with the goals of Vision 2030.
An exceptional operational plan to meet increasing demand
The head of corporate communications at Saudi Railway Company (SAR), Hussam Al-Shehri, affirmed the company's commitment to accommodating the increased number of Umrah pilgrims and visitors during Ramadan. This was achieved by increasing the number of train journeys between its various stations to transport the largest possible number of passengers to their destinations, particularly between Makkah and Madinah. He explained that the company is implementing a comprehensive operational plan, the largest of its kind, aimed at maximizing train capacity and facilitating the movement of pilgrims.
Al-Shehri stated that the number of daily trips during the last ten days of Ramadan has been increased to more than 140 per day to accommodate the significant rise in the number of Umrah pilgrims. The train network's operational and technical teams are working around the clock to ensure readiness, smooth operation, and full compliance with the highest safety standards. In a strategic move to modernize its fleet, SAR recently signed an agreement to purchase 20 new trains from the Spanish company Talgo, adding to its existing fleet of 35 trains, with the aim of enhancing future capacity.
The economic and international impact of the success of the Haramain High-Speed Railway
The success of the Haramain High-Speed Railway at full capacity is not limited to the local level; its impact extends regionally and internationally. Locally, the project contributes to alleviating traffic congestion and reducing carbon emissions, thus supporting environmental sustainability. Internationally, providing world-class transportation services to millions of Muslims from around the globe reflects the Kingdom's exceptional ability to manage massive crowds and organize major religious seasons with high professionalism. This success reinforces Saudi Arabia's position as a leading destination for advanced logistics services and leaves a profoundly positive impression on travelers who have expressed their immense happiness and gratitude for the comfort, speed, and punctuality the train provides, despite the high demand.
