Hani Al-Mulla emphasized the importance of administrators as the backbone of a sustainable Saudi film industry, in light of the major transformations taking place in the sector within the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.

The importance of management in the Saudi film industry

In a notable statement during the Saudi Media Forum 2024, Hani bin Ahmed Al-Mulla, Executive Director of the Saudi Cinema Association and the Saudi Film Festival, emphasized that the sustainability and development of the film industry in the Kingdom depends not only on creative individuals and artists, but also requires professional administrative expertise within the cultural and artistic sector. Al-Mulla affirmed, "We have support mechanisms in place for artists and creatives, but administrators are the backbone of any sustainable film industry.".

Al-Mulla explained that the role of administrators is crucial in transforming creative ideas into successful projects. They are responsible for meticulous financial planning, managing large budgets, setting timelines, securing necessary funding, and obtaining official permits. Furthermore, they manage work teams and coordinate logistics, distribution, and marketing operations, ensuring a balance between high technical quality and the project's commercial viability.

Historical context: A cinematic renaissance under Vision 2030

These statements come at a time when Saudi Arabia is experiencing an unprecedented cinematic boom. Following the lifting of the ban on public cinemas in late 2017, which had lasted for more than 35 years, the doors have opened to a promising sector that has become an integral part of the goals of Vision 2030 to diversify the economy and develop the cultural and entertainment sectors. The past few years have witnessed rapid growth in the number of screens and cinemas, the establishment of specialized bodies such as the Film Commission, and a significant increase in the volume of local production, creating an urgent need to develop a comprehensive infrastructure that includes not only artistic talent but also the administrative personnel capable of managing this growth.

Strategic importance and future impact

Focusing on the administrative aspects of the film industry has profound strategic dimensions. Locally, it contributes to creating an integrated system that provides thousands of jobs for producers, project managers, accountants, and marketers, thus bolstering the creative economy. Regionally, building a professionally managed industry positions the Kingdom to become a leading film production hub in the Middle East, attracting global investments and productions. Internationally, cinema is a powerful tool of soft power, with Saudi films contributing to sharing Saudi culture and heritage with the world, challenging stereotypes, and opening new avenues for international cultural cooperation.

The role of the film association in empowering the industry

The Saudi Cinema Association, established in August 2021 as the first non-profit organization specializing in this sector, plays a pivotal role in realizing this vision. Al-Mulla noted that the association's presence at the Media Forum reflects the integration between the film and media sectors in achieving the Vision's ambitions. The association works to develop the film industry by providing a training environment through workshops and technical consultations, empowering filmmakers, and unifying the efforts of professionals. The Saudi Film Festival, whose twelfth edition will be held in 2026 in partnership with the Ithra Center and with the support of the Film Commission, is one of the association's most prominent initiatives, providing a platform to showcase local productions and solidify the Saudi cinematic identity.
