Greenland's Prime Minister rejects Trump's ambitions to annex the island, affirming his people's sovereignty. Learn about Greenland's strategic importance, the details of European solidarity, and the history of American ambitions.

In a decisive and direct response to repeated statements by US President Donald Trump, Greenland's Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen affirmed on Tuesday that crucial decisions concerning the island's future will be made only on its soil and by the will of its people. This strong statement put an end to speculation fueled by Trump's renewed desire to annex the self-governing Danish territory to the United States.

In a poignant Facebook post, Nielsen wrote, "Greenland is our country. Our decisions are made here," expressing his deep sadness and dismay at the way his country's situation is being portrayed in American political discourse. He pointed out that reducing the identity and history of an entire people to a mere "real estate deal" or "security necessity" does not reflect the reality of Greenland or how its people see themselves.

Historical background and American ambitions

The United States' desire to control Greenland is not a recent development or limited to the Trump administration; its roots extend back to the mid-20th century. In 1946, US President Harry Truman offered Denmark $100 million worth of gold for the island, given its vital strategic location in the Arctic. This desire resurfaced in 2019 during Trump's first term, causing a brief diplomatic crisis and the postponement of an official visit to Denmark after the Danish Prime Minister described the idea as "absurd.".

Strategic and geopolitical importance

Trump's recent statements justifying his need for Greenland to ensure his country's security against China and Russia come at a time of intense international competition in the Arctic. Greenland is of paramount importance to US national security for several reasons:

  • Thule Air Base: The island hosts the US Thule Air Base, the northernmost US military base, which plays a pivotal role in the ballistic missile early warning system and space surveillance.
  • Natural resources: The island contains huge reserves of rare earth minerals essential for technological and military industries, which puts it at the heart of the economic conflict with China, which dominates the market for these minerals.
  • Shipping routes: As ice melts due to climate change, new shipping routes are opening up in the Arctic, increasing the geopolitical importance of controlling this region.

Broad European solidarity

In response to the international crisis, Nielsen praised the "calm and dignified" reaction of the Greenlandic people, expressing his gratitude for the overwhelming international support his country has received. He stated, "This support confirms that we are not alone here on our land." French President Emmanuel Macron also weighed in on the crisis, affirming his full support for Denmark and Greenland.

Macron wrote a solidarity tweet via the “X” platform, saying: “I join my voice with the voices of Europeans to express our full solidarity,” stressing that Greenland “belongs to its people” and that Denmark is the guarantor of its sovereignty, in a clear reference to the European rejection of any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the Arctic region.
