Germany reveals the scale of its military support to Ukraine, amounting to billions of euros, making it the leading European donor. Learn details about the weapons provided and the impact of this support on European security.

The German government has officially revealed the extent of its military aid to Ukraine, confirming that Kyiv was the primary destination for its arms exports last year. According to data from the Berlin Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, the military aid provided to Ukraine amounted to approximately two billion euros, as part of ongoing efforts to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities against the Russian invasion.

A historic shift in German defense policy

This massive support represents a radical shift in Germany’s foreign and defense policy, which had previously been extremely cautious about sending lethal weapons to conflict zones. At the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz declared a “turning point” (Zeitenwende), pledging to increase defense spending and provide Ukraine with the equipment it needed to defend its sovereignty. Since then, Germany has become Ukraine’s second-largest military backer globally, after the United States, and its leading supplier in Europe. The aid has included advanced air defense systems such as the IRIS-T, Leopard tanks, Gepard anti-aircraft guns, and vast quantities of ammunition.

The importance of support and its impact on European security

The impact of this support extends beyond the battlefield in Ukraine, encompassing the entire European security architecture. Besides Ukraine, Norway and Sweden ranked second and third, respectively, as the largest importers of German arms. Norway, a founding member of NATO, acquired weapons worth €1.3 billion, while Sweden, which abandoned its historical neutrality and joined the alliance in March 2014, purchased equipment worth €1 billion. This trend reflects the desire of Russia's neighbors to bolster their defense capabilities and underscores Germany's role as a cornerstone of the European defense industry and a major contributor to the continent's security.

Regional and international repercussions

Internationally, Germany’s continued support for Ukraine reinforces the unity of the Western position against Russia. It also sends a clear message that European countries are prepared to assume greater responsibility for their own security. The continued flow of German arms and other Western aid is crucial in enabling Ukraine to withstand the onslaught and inflict losses on Russian forces, which could influence the course of the war and the balance of power in the region in the long term. This commitment underscores that Ukraine’s security is an integral part of the security of Europe as a whole.
