Coach Julian Nagelsmann has emphasized the importance of team spirit and group strength within the German national team as the four-time world champions prepare for a crucial series of friendly matches. These intensive preparations come ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the German team aims to regain its former glory. Germany will play away against Switzerland on Friday, before hosting Ghana three days later. They will conclude their friendly matches against Finland and the United States in June.
The historical legacy and challenges of the German national team in major tournaments
For decades, German football has cultivated a formidable reputation thanks to its consistent success on the world stage, earning them the well-deserved title of "Team of Champions." Historically, the Germans are among the most successful national teams globally, having won the World Cup four times (1954, 1974, 1990, and 2014), in addition to three European Championship titles. However, this illustrious legacy suffered a significant blow with their early and shocking exits from the group stage in both the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. This noticeable decline has placed immense pressure on the German Football Association and the players to regroup and get back on track, especially as the fans are no longer willing to tolerate further failures. Despite possessing a number of outstanding individual talents who shine at top European clubs, the overall quality of the squad still appears to fall short of other strong teams like England, Spain, and France in terms of individual brilliance.
Relying on the Bayern Munich core as a machine that works smoothly
However, Nagelsmann, by selecting a core group of Bayern Munich players currently enjoying exceptional form, believes his team possesses the flexibility and cohesion to achieve success in upcoming competitions. The young coach stated, “If you have the best team in the world, you can only play your own game. We have a very good team, but we didn't have the best team in the world at Euro 2024 or last year. We need to reach a level of diversity that allows us to help a very good team perform exceptionally well.”.
As is typical of the best modern German national teams, the current squad boasts a solid core of Bayern Munich players, with Nagelsmann selecting seven from the Bavarian club – the highest number he has called up since taking charge. The number was initially expected to rise to eight, but Jamal Musiala was left out to continue his recovery from injury, though the number 10 jersey remains his. After years of underperformance, Bayern have returned to their best form this season, achieving impressive results across all competitions.
In this context, national team captain Joshua Kimmich said he was happy to see so many of his club teammates in the squad, adding: “Having so many Bayern players in the national team helps, because we are a machine that works smoothly and we train together every day. We have certain mechanisms that are understood.”.
The expected impact of the return of machinery on the international stage
The return of the Germans to their former glory will not only be a domestic triumph, but will also have a significant impact on the regional and international football scene. Restoring balance means a return to fierce competition in major tournaments, thus raising the technical and marketing value of these competitions. Since taking over as national team coach in 2023, Nagelsmann has focused on the players' readiness rather than their reputations, emphasizing the need to build a cohesive team comprised of players prepared to work hard. He has recently relied on the Bayer Leverkusen stars who won the double in the 2023-2024 season, as well as the outstanding players from Stuttgart.
Bayern's attacking core is completed by a trio of Premier League professionals: Kai Havertz, Florian Wirtz, and Nick Füllkrug, alongside Stuttgart's in-form striker Deniz Ondav. Havertz, who is often deployed as a striker by Nagelsmann, embodies the required versatility. Havertz said: "I feel comfortable in all attacking positions. I'm a versatile player, and I've played in different positions for the national team and Arsenal.".
Havertz praised the atmosphere within the camp, noting that the team would use the friendly matches to put the finishing touches on what has already become a strong unit. He concluded by saying, “Team spirit is the most important element. No team can succeed without harmony. We are on the right track, and we will do everything we can to be a cohesive unit, and I am very confident that we will succeed.”.
