The Imam and Khateeb of the Grand Mosque, His Eminence Sheikh Dr. Bandar bin Abdulaziz Balila, delivered an inspiring sermon addressing matters of faith that touch the lives of Muslims. In his Friday sermon , Sheikh Bandar Balila urged the congregation to fear God Almighty and to thank Him for His manifest and hidden blessings. He explained that one of the greatest blessings bestowed upon a servant is the joy of obeying his Lord and feeling the impact of this obedience in his heart and conduct, emphasizing that joy in obedience is conclusive proof of a living heart and a sincere connection with God Almighty.
The strategic importance and religious significance of the pulpit of the Grand Mosque
The pulpit of the Grand Mosque in Mecca holds immense historical and religious significance in the Islamic world, as the sermons delivered from it serve as guiding messages that transcend the boundaries of time and place. Since the dawn of Islam, this pulpit has been a beacon for disseminating the values of tolerance, moderation, and spiritual purification. The sermons delivered in the Grand Mosque are of paramount importance because they reach millions of Muslims through live broadcasts and various media outlets, making them a powerful tool for unifying the Muslim community and guiding the nation towards what is best for their faith and their worldly lives. The words that resonate from this sacred place carry profound weight and have a deep impact on shaping the religious and cultural consciousness of Muslims across the globe.
Details of Sheikh Bandar Balila's Friday sermon: Commendable and reprehensible joy
His Eminence explained that God Almighty instilled joy in humankind and provided multiple avenues and sources for it, whether related to worldly blessings or the bliss of the Hereafter. He divided joy into two main types: the first is “praiseworthy joy,” which is linked to obedience to God and His favor, and the guidance and success He bestows upon His servants. This joy arises from knowing and loving God, and recognizing His blessings, which leads the servant to gratitude, submission, and humility. The second type is “blameworthy joy,” which is based on excessive attachment to worldly things, accompanied by arrogance, conceit, and insolence, thus distancing the servant from his Lord and plunging him into the mire of heedlessness.
The spiritual and societal impact of the sermon message
Clarifying these concepts has a profound impact on both local and international levels. On an individual level, this discourse guides Muslims toward re-evaluating the sources of their happiness, linking them to spiritual values rather than fleeting material possessions, thus fostering psychological well-being and inner peace. On a societal and regional level, promoting the concept of "commendable joy" contributes to building humble, supportive societies, free from the ostentatious and arrogant displays that harm the social fabric. The true joy that believers strive for is joy in God's grace and mercy, as stated in the verse: "Say, 'In the bounty of God and in His mercy—in that let them rejoice; it is better than what they accumulate.'".
Righteousness and completing the seasons of worship
Sheikh Balila pointed out that one of the greatest forms of praiseworthy joy is the joy of the heart in the Holy Quran and the guidance and mercy it contains, as well as the joy of completing acts of worship, such as fasting. A Muslim experiences two great joys: the joy of breaking the fast and the greater joy of meeting his Lord with the good deeds he has performed. He emphasized that it is a blessing from God for a servant to rejoice in completing seasons of worship and to thank God for enabling him to reach them and for His help in them, especially the blessed month of Ramadan.
His Eminence called for building upon the fruits of these acts of worship after the season ends, and for the believer to continue on the path of righteousness. He pointed out that one of the signs of acceptance of deeds is that the believer follows one good deed with another, and persists in obedience, including fasting the six days of Shawwal in emulation of the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He emphasized in concluding his sermon the importance of thanking God for the blessing of being guided to acts of worship, and of preserving the good one has gained, so that this may be evidence of acceptance and a sign of steadfastness and success in this life and the hereafter.
