Flamengo clinched their eighth Brazilian league title, completing a double victory in the Copa Libertadores in an exceptional season. Learn more about the achievement and the team's journey in the Intercontinental Cup.

On a historic night at the legendary Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Flamengo continued to write a glorious chapter in Brazilian and South American football, clinching the Brazilian Serie A title on Wednesday. This well-deserved triumph came after a hard-fought and hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ceará, thanks to a decisive goal from the brilliant winger Samuel Leno. This domestic achievement further cements the dominance of "La Robro Negro" (The Black Stars), coming just four days after the team conquered the continent by winning the Copa Libertadores for the fourth time in their history, defeating their arch-rivals Palmeiras in the final.

Absolute dominance and historical duality

With this victory, Flamengo increased their points tally to 78, extending their lead to a full 5 points over their closest rivals, Palmeiras, with only one round remaining in the season, thus officially securing the title. This is the eighth title in the history of Brazil's most popular club, adding to their previous wins in 1980, 1982, 1983, 1992, 2019, and 2020, equaling the record held by the prestigious Santos club. Palmeiras still leads the all-time list with 12 titles.

This tournament holds special significance as it places Flamengo among the legendary clubs that have achieved the "golden double" (domestic league title and continental championship) in a single season. Only a very few clubs have ever accomplished this feat, most notably Santos, led by the legendary Pelé, in 1962 and 1963, Flamengo itself in its golden era in 2019, and Botafogo in 2024. Furthermore, Flamengo stands alone as the first Brazilian club to win the Copa Libertadores, the equivalent of the UEFA Champions League in terms of prestige and competition, four times.

Festive atmosphere and moving statements

Flamengo fans experienced an unforgettable night in the packed Maracanã stadium, unfurling huge banners proclaiming "King of Cups" to celebrate the double. At the post-match press conference, coach Filipe Luís couldn't hide his emotion, saying proudly, "In a few years, the players will realize the magnitude of what they've achieved... They are immortal in the club's history.".

The hero of the night was Samuel Leno (25 years old), who joined the team this season from Atlético Madrid in a record-breaking deal worth €31.6 million. Leno scored the decisive goal in the 38th minute, capitalizing on a perfectly weighted through ball from Colombian Jorge Carrascal. Leno commented on this achievement, saying, “This shows how resilient I am. I fight all the time, I struggle, not just during this match, but throughout my career and in my daily life. Scoring the winning goal makes me incredibly happy.”.

The Road to Global

Although the domestic competition has concluded, Flamengo's season is far from over, with major international challenges awaiting them. The team is preparing to face Mexico's Cruz Azul, the CONCACAF champions, next Wednesday in the Intercontinental Cup. Should they overcome this hurdle, the winner will meet Egypt's Pyramids FC, the African champions, for a place in the coveted final. The other finalist, scheduled for December 17 in Doha, will be French football giants Paris Saint-Germain, the European champions, in what promises to be a thrilling and highly competitive encounter.
