A majestic scene of faith: The first night of Ramadan begins in the precincts of the Grand Mosque
In a magnificent display of faith, the Grand Mosque in Mecca witnessed this evening the arrival of vast crowds of worshippers and pilgrims from all corners of the earth to perform the Isha and Taraweeh prayers, marking the beginning of the first night of the blessed month of Ramadan. A spiritual atmosphere filled with reverence and tranquility permeated the ancient House and its courtyards, as the voices of worshippers rose in supplication and prayer, embodying the unity and harmony of Muslims in the holiest place on earth, amidst a comprehensive system of services designed to facilitate the performance of rituals with peace and ease.
Tarawih prayer: A Ramadan ritual with a special status
Tarawih prayers are among the most prominent rituals of Ramadan. They are night prayers performed by Muslims in congregation after the Isha prayer throughout the nights of the holy month. This Sunnah (Prophetic tradition) dates back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), where Muslims gather to listen to and reflect upon verses from the Holy Quran, fostering a spiritual atmosphere and strengthening community bonds. These prayers acquire added significance when performed in the Grand Mosque (Masjid al-Haram), where the reward for prayer is multiplied, and where millions flock to worship near the Kaaba. This makes the first Tarawih prayer in the Grand Mosque an event eagerly anticipated by Muslims worldwide.
The importance of the event and its global impact
The impact of this event is not limited to the local level, but extends to the entire Muslim world. Images of worshippers filling the circumambulation area, the corridors, and the courtyards of the Grand Mosque are broadcast across global media, sending a message of unity and peace and bringing joy to the hearts of more than two billion Muslims worldwide, heralding the beginning of the blessed month of Ramadan. Nationally, this occasion highlights the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ability to manage massive crowds and provide the highest quality services to pilgrims, which aligns with its leading role as Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and is consistent with the goals of Vision 2030 to enrich the religious experience for visitors.
An integrated service system for the comfort of the pilgrims
To facilitate the performance of rituals on this blessed night, the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, in cooperation with security and service authorities, implemented a comprehensive operational plan. These efforts included organizing entry and exit through designated pathways to ensure smooth flow and prevent overcrowding, and intensifying ongoing cleaning, sanitization, and disinfection of all mosque facilities and courtyards. A vast number of bottles of blessed Zamzam water were also made available, and the air conditioning, sound, and lighting systems were operated at full capacity. Special carts and pathways were provided for the elderly and people with disabilities, all with the aim of creating a safe and comfortable worship environment befitting the sanctity of the place and the significance of the time.
