His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, the Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, received a high-level joint telephone call from the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Constantinos Koumbous. This call comes at a time when Cyprus holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, which lends particular importance to the discussions held between the three parties.
During the call, a comprehensive review was conducted of all developments on the regional and international scenes, in addition to discussing the diplomatic efforts made to contain tensions and enhance security and stability in the Middle East region.
Significance of the timing and Cyprus's presidency of the European Union
This contact is of particular strategic importance given that the Republic of Cyprus will assume the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union (in the first half of 2026). The country holding the presidency plays a pivotal role in shaping the European foreign policy agenda and coordinating positions among member states. By virtue of its geographical location as the closest EU member state to the Middle East, Cyprus possesses a deep understanding of the region's complexities and serves as a vital bridge for dialogue between Europe and the Arab world.
Strengthening the Saudi-European partnership
The joint contact between Kallas and Kombous with His Highness the Foreign Minister reflects the growing European desire for direct coordination with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Brussels views Riyadh as an indispensable strategic partner in formulating sustainable solutions to the crises plaguing the region. These discussions are an extension of a series of meetings and communications aimed at deepening cooperation between the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, particularly on security and economic matters.
The Kingdom's pivotal role in regional stability
These discussions underscore the central role of Saudi Arabia in leading diplomatic efforts in the region. The Kingdom is spearheading intensive diplomatic initiatives to de-escalate tensions in hotspots and is working in parallel with international partners, including the European Union, to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid and support political solutions. Coordination with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy enhances the prospects for unifying international perspectives on outstanding issues and reaffirms that regional security in the Middle East is an integral part of European and global security.
In conclusion, both sides agreed to continue coordination and consultation during the coming period, to ensure keeping pace with rapid changes and working together to achieve peace and sustainable development.
