On an unforgettable football night at the Unico Madre de Ciudades stadium in Santiago del Estero, Estudiantes de La Plata wrote a new chapter in its glorious history, winning the Argentine Football League title (Clausura 2025 stage), after defeating its stubborn rival Racing Club 5-4 on penalties, following a draw in both regular and extra time.
Veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, from Uruguay, played a pivotal role in this achievement, brilliantly saving Franco Pardo's decisive penalty kick to secure the coveted title for his team. With tears in his eyes after the victory, Muslera said, “This team is incredible. I can't find the words to describe the emotions and joy I feel right now for contributing to getting here, especially after times when many doubted our ability to compete.”.
This crowning achievement holds a special historical significance for the “Lions” squad, as it is the club’s first league title since winning the Apertura in 2010, thus ending a long drought of local titles that lasted for years, bringing back memories of the club’s historical glories.
The match was a rollercoaster of dramatic twists and turns that kept fans on the edge of their seats. After a cautious first half, tensions escalated in the second, particularly after Racing's Adrian Martinez's strong challenge on Santiago Nunez, which sparked widespread controversy over the refereeing. Everyone thought the title was in Racing's hands when Adrian Martinez scored the go-ahead goal ten minutes from time, capitalizing on a defensive lapse. However, Estudiantes' fighting spirit shone through in stoppage time when Guido Carrillo rose to meet a perfectly placed cross and powerfully headed the ball into the net, forcing extra time.
Carrillo, who returned to action after a four-match suspension, commented: “It’s an indescribable feeling. This is the reward of supporting a club that always rises again. The past few weeks have been tough, but this group has shown its strong character.”.
With this victory, Estudiantes has set up a fiery encounter next week with Platense, the champion of this year’s opening stage, to compete for the “Trofeo de Campeones” title, in a match that will determine the absolute leader of the football season in Argentina, amid great anticipation from Latin American football fans.
