Learn about the weather details for the Eid holidays in Saudi Arabia, as the National Center for Meteorology warned of weather fluctuations, thunderstorms, and active winds hitting several regions during the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Saudi Arabia is experiencing significant weather fluctuations coinciding with the Eid al-Fitr holiday, as citizens and residents await details of the holiday's weather forecast to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. The National Center of Meteorology has announced a rainy weather system beginning next Wednesday and continuing until Monday, which will add a special dimension to the festive atmosphere. This system will bring varying intensities of thunderstorms, active winds that may stir up dust and sand, the possibility of flash floods and hail in several areas, and high waves along the coasts.

The nature of the spring climate and its effect on the weather during the Eid holidays

These changes in the weather during the Eid holidays are part of the natural fluctuations that characterize spring in the Arabian Peninsula. Historically, spring in Saudi Arabia is known for its atmospheric instability, where warm and cold air masses collide, leading to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds and thunderstorms. This transitional period often sees widespread rainfall across large parts of the country, a common climatic phenomenon that contributes to the renewal of vegetation and the replenishment of groundwater after the dry winter season.

Thunderstorm map and its impact on regions

The report issued by the General Directorate of Weather and Climate Forecasts indicated that the effects will begin in the northern regions of the Kingdom. In the Tabuk region, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected on Wednesday and Thursday (March 18 and 19), including in Tayma, Haql, Neom, Duba, Al Wajh, and Umluj, with lighter rainfall expected on Saturday. The weather system will also extend to Al Jawf and the Northern Borders region, bringing moderate to heavy rain, with light showers continuing until the beginning of the following week.

In the western part of the Kingdom, the Madinah region (including Wadi Al-Fara, Badr, Yanbu, and Al-Ula) will experience heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday. In the Makkah region, light to moderate rain is expected in the holy city of Makkah, Jeddah, and Rabigh, while heavier rainfall is anticipated in Taif, Maysan, Adham, and Turabah from Thursday until Monday.

In the south, Al-Baha, Asir, and Jazan will be affected by moderate to heavy rain, including Abha, Khamis Mushait, Bisha, and Fifa. In the central and eastern regions, Riyadh (the capital, Al-Dilam, and Al-Muzahmiya), Al-Qassim, Hail, and the Eastern Province (Dammam, Al-Khobar, and Hafr Al-Batin) will experience varying amounts of rainfall, peaking towards the end of the week.

Weather conditions affect celebrations and transportation

This change in weather is of great importance and has a direct impact at the local level, especially as it coincides with the holiday season. On the one hand, these conditions necessitate caution when traveling between cities and governorates on highways for family visits, due to reduced visibility caused by dust or heavy rain. On the other hand, these fluctuations may prompt families to adjust their leisure plans and prefer indoor venues over open parks. However, the rainfall has a significant positive impact on the agricultural sector and water reserves in dams, promising a prosperous spring season that will positively affect domestic tourism in the following weeks.

Official warnings and safety guidelines

The National Center of Meteorology has classified the intensity of rainfall associated with the current weather system into several categories. Light rainfall ranges between 1 and 4 millimeters per hour, accompanied by downdrafts reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h. Moderate (5-9 mm/hour) and heavy (10-50 mm/hour) rainfall may be accompanied by winds exceeding 60 km/h, flash floods, hail, and, in some limited cases, the possibility of tornadoes. Authorities urged everyone to follow updates via the "Anwaa" app and to adhere to Civil Defense instructions to ensure the safety of lives and property.
