In its ongoing pursuit of providing the highest levels of care and attention to those visiting the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the Authority for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques (the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque) has implemented a massive and exceptional operational system to serve the pilgrims. Within a period of no more than fifteen days, the Authority achieved record-breaking results in ensuring the highest standards of readiness and cleanliness. The total water consumption for preparing and operating 9,214 restrooms reached approximately 81,000 cubic meters, directly contributing to providing a comprehensive, safe, and healthy environment that meets the needs of millions of visitors and pilgrims.
A long history of meticulous care for Islamic holy sites
These achievements were not a sudden occurrence, but rather the culmination of a long history and a distinguished record of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's meticulous care for the Islamic holy sites since its unification. Historically, the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina have witnessed a series of major expansions that have not only increased their capacity but have also radically developed their infrastructure and service facilities. Cleaning, water provision, and facility maintenance have evolved from simple, traditional methods in past decades to relying on the latest global technologies and smart systems in the modern era, reflecting a firm commitment to serving Islam and Muslims and facilitating the performance of religious rites.
Standard indicators and sustainable cleaning processes
As part of its ongoing efforts to maintain service facilities and improve the quality of the indoor environment, field teams used 19,123 liters of cleaning and sanitizing materials. Additionally, 362 air fresheners were distributed throughout the restrooms, consuming approximately 700 liters of premium fragrance during the same period to enhance user comfort. Operational indicators revealed that 180 thorough cleanings and 150 quick wipes were performed, resulting in a daily average of approximately 5,400 cubic meters of water and 1,275 liters of cleaning materials. Furthermore, 12 washes and 10 wipes were conducted daily to ensure the facilities remain consistently clean and ready for use.

To accomplish these massive and complex tasks around the clock, the Authority has mobilized a highly trained workforce of 890 employees to manage the system with exceptional efficiency. The team includes 16 service providers (12 men and 4 women), 73 supervisors, and 801 workers. This tireless field presence reflects the scale of the work and the dedication to creating a spiritually enriching environment, enabling visitors to perform their religious duties with ease and complete peace of mind, surrounded by care and attention from all sides.
