The Ministry of Environment in Sharqia confirms its readiness to meet the increasing demand for chicken and eggs during Ramadan, with an abundance of local production and strict monitoring to ensure food security.

With the approach of the holy month of Ramadan, the Eastern Province branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture confirmed its readiness to meet the local market's needs for poultry and eggs. The branch emphasized the abundance of local production, supported by a rigorous monitoring system to ensure the safety of supplies and enhance food security for consumers. These efforts are part of a proactive plan to address the anticipated increase in demand during Ramadan.

Strategic background: Food security and Vision 2030

These preparations fall within the broader context of Saudi Arabia’s food security strategy, a key pillar of Vision 2030. The Kingdom has prioritized the development of its agricultural and livestock sectors over the past decades, aiming for self-sufficiency in essential commodities and reducing reliance on imports. The poultry sector is among the most rapidly growing, benefiting from government support in the form of subsidized loans, land allocation, and logistical support, which has encouraged significant investment in the field.

Control measures to ensure quality and safety

Engineer Saleh Al-Ghamdi, Deputy Director General of the branch, explained that the Eastern Province is home to dozens of farms specializing in poultry and egg production, all of which operate according to strict health and safety standards and are subject to continuous veterinary supervision. He added that the Ministry's field teams are intensifying their inspection tours of farms, slaughterhouses, and retail outlets to ensure the application of the highest food safety standards, from the health of the flocks to proper storage and display methods. He also emphasized the importance of consumer awareness regarding the necessity of storing these products at appropriate temperatures and cooking them thoroughly to ensure they are free from any potential health risks.

The importance of chicken and eggs on the Ramadan table

For his part, Engineer Waleed Al-Shuwaired, Director of the Agriculture Department, highlighted the high nutritional value of chicken and eggs as an ideal choice for those fasting. He pointed out that these products are a rich source of high-quality protein and essential amino acids, with a lower fat content compared to other meats. He added that consuming them in moderation during Iftar and Suhoor effectively replenishes lost protein and provides a feeling of satiety for longer periods, in addition to their vital role in building muscle and maintaining the body's energy during fasting hours.

Economic and local impact

Ensuring the stability and availability of local products not only benefits consumers but also provides strong support for the local economy. Increased production means creating more job opportunities in farms, factories, and the transportation and distribution sector. Price stability also protects consumers from market fluctuations and helps maintain household purchasing power. The Ministry affirmed its commitment to supporting producers through incentive programs to expand production lines and providing logistical support to ensure the smooth flow of supply chains and prevent any disruptions that could affect the market during this critical period.
