In a move reflecting Saudi Arabia's commitment to fostering sustainability and innovation among younger generations, Jeddah hosted an educational field trip for school students as part of the E1 World Powerboat Championship. This initiative is part of the "Driving Force Presented by PIF" program, which aims to integrate sports with education and highlight the future of sustainable mobility.
A comprehensive educational program to support future skills
Launched by the Public Investment Fund in April 2025, this program is a cornerstone of support for the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Targeting the 8-18 age group, the program is designed to stimulate young people's abilities and prepare them to keep pace with the rapid advancements in the electric vehicle sector. Through interactive workshops, students engage in hands-on experiences that simulate real-world industry scenarios, from preparing presentations and conducting scientific research to implementing practical experiments that address clean energy challenges.
Field experience at the heart of the action
The tour offered the students a unique opportunity to be at the heart of the championship venue in Jeddah, where they gained firsthand experience of the electric speedboats and the advanced technologies used in them. The program included face-to-face meetings with elite racers such as Danny Close from Team OK, Rusty White from Team Al-Ula, and Micah Wilkinson from Team Drogba. The students enriched the discussion by asking questions about the technical and environmental aspects, transforming the sporting event into an inspiring learning platform.
Global context and strategic importance
This initiative gains significance from the global trend towards net-zero carbon emissions and reduced emissions. The E1 Championship is the world’s first electric powerboat racing series, representing the marine equivalent of Formula E motor racing. Jeddah’s hosting of this championship reinforces the Kingdom’s position as a global hub for sustainable sports, in line with Saudi Vision 2030, which prioritizes environmental sustainability and quality of life.
A strategic partnership for an ambitious vision
In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), John Williams, General Manager of the E1 tournament, affirmed that choosing Jeddah as the venue for the tournament reflects its prestigious global standing. He noted that the partnership with the Public Investment Fund represents an integrated model that combines sporting excitement with an educational message, leaving a lasting impact that extends beyond mere competition.
In conclusion, electric motorsports today is a true laboratory for technological innovation, as the solutions developed in these races contribute to improving the efficiency of commercial and personal vehicles in the future, making the involvement of students in this event a true investment in future leaders who will carry the torch of development in the clean energy sector.
